Seeing Phupha open and relaxed like this was warming Tian’s heart. Contrary to his teasing, he knew that the Chief could have fun, could smile, could be easy going. But tipsy Phupha was something else. When he told Tian that he was feeling lonely, something tightened in his stomach and he placed his hand on Phupha’s knee. Leaning a bit closer, his smile returned: “I’m here. I’m here to keep you company.”

His heart skipped a beat when the Chief closed his own fingers around Tian’s hand. It squeezed painfully when Phupha earnestly told him that he didn’t just want a friend.

“You are drunk,” he said, with an amused smile, feeling off-kilter and… a bit hopeful.

Phupha kept his eyes fixed on Tian, tightening his hold. “Drunk people don’t lie.” A statement. A simple fact.

A confession?

Tian smiled down at their hands, heart fluttery and anxious. Happy. “Really?”

“Tian.” Phupha leaned closer, body pliant and warm against Tian, even through the added layer of the jacket. “There are times where a thought crosses my mind.” He couldn’t look away as the Chief opened up to him. They’ve been building up to this, he thought hazily. Was this really it? What all the teasing - flirting? - had been leading up to? Was he even ready? “The closer I get to you, the more I think of something that is impossible.” He couldn’t stop smiling. His hand felt warm in Phupha’s, his chest warm in the moment. He couldn’t quite- ”Sometimes you remind me of Torfun so much.”

The sound around Tian screeched to a halt. The heart that had happily raced just a moment ago, slowed to a painful reminder of everything that had happened. Tian’s smile slipped right off. He had worried about this exact thing. Had worried that his own feelings were not his own. Had worried that… that Phupha wasn’t really looking at him.

He knew that his own feelings were real, had known ever since he had his talk with Tul.

He loved the Chief.

Tian was in love with him. Just Tian, not Torfun.

The sound rushed back into his head when Phupha called his name, still so gentle. He had no idea that he had just broken Tian’s heart right in two. No idea, the damage his words had caused. Tian tried to smile again but didn’t quite manage to hold it up. He did listen, though and when Phupha asked him if Tian had something that he needed to tell him, he made up his mind, his mouth dry. “There is something I want to tell you, Chief.”

But he hesitated, his throat closing up as he struggled to form the words. How was he supposed to tell Phupha the truth? What would he do if the man started to hate him? He was scared. The Chief was staring at him with such intense eyes and he didn’t know where to start. Usually, Phupha’s presence meant safety, if exasperation. Now he felt like a mouse staring straight at a very hungry cat.

“What do you need to tell me?” Phupha’s question sounded serious, sounded important. But slowly, something in his eyes changed, turned teasing and sly, just like when they were bantering. “Are you going to confess your love to me?” He asked with humour in his voice and Tian’s heart cracked into more little pieces.

He had to blink a few times, the air rushing out of him in a quiet huff. His lips quirked into a smile, but it probably looked more like a grimace.

A joke.

It hurt.

But then the Chief was moving closer, his eyes dark and hooded and full of intent. Tian didn’t really know what to think anymore, his mind a jumbled mess of hope and hurt and heartbreak. Was Phupha going to kiss him?

Did he want to kiss Tian? Or Torfun? Was he drunk enough to confuse them? He had called Torfun a sister but had told Tian that he didn’t just want a casual friend in the same moment that he told him that they seemed to be the same person.

What was he supposed to do?

Everything felt wrong.

When Phupha’s head collided with his shoulder, his hand reached up to cup his neck on its own accord. “Chief. Are you alright?” But the man was out cold, heaving gentle breaths against Tian’s chest. Sighing, he kneaded his fingers into the Chief’s neck and willed his body to stop shaking. His heart to stop racing painfully against his chest.

He had to tell him.

He had to tell everyone.

And then would have to leave.

Maybe that was for the best.

It felt like a lie, even in his own head.

Tian closed his eyes.

THE SADDEST PART OF A 1000 STARS IS THAT NAWAT FINALLY SAW EARTH AND DIDNT SAY “WOW I AM SO EXCITED. THANK YOU. I AM FROM THAILAND” THEN PROCEEDS TO NOD IN THAI. AND THEN EARTH NODS IN PROUD HUBBY.

I love the entire village's dynamic with the chief which is basically they all know he is badass but also each and everyone roasts the fuck out of him!!

Like Khama, Dr Nam and Longtae all banding together and laughing at Phupha's dopey looks, the rangers teasing the shit out of their chief every time he acts whipped and the children hold no limits and just straight up destroy him!!

Love that for the chief! He deserves to be flustered and roasted for being a whipped idiot in love!
