Hello! I was wondering if I could ask something real quick. So I'm designing the musical at my highschool, and we're doing Cinderella. We need a big transforming dress, the rags to riches transformation is going to be completely on stage. I have no clue where to start with any kind of research and I don't know what resources I could check for how to create a transforming dress. Youtube isn't that great. I hate to bother you but I have no clue where to start. I appreciate any help you can give me

You’ve just hit the nail on the head-there isn’t really a “standard” for transforming dresses or much research other than watching videos and trying to figure out how it happens. 

Most transformation changes are usually one of two types-a breakaway or a true contained transformation.

 A breakaway is usually a dress worn under another dress with the top dress held on by magnets, snaps, or velcro, and it gets essentially torn off at some point, exposing the underneath dress (the Elsa transformation in Frozen on Broadway into the ice dress is a breakaway) I’ve also seen Cirque du Soleil use tuxedos rigged into one unit with zippers that are purposefully run off the track so they’ll split when you yank on part of it. 

The cinderella transformations that I’m used to seeing are usually contained transformations, so the actress essentially wears two bodices- the one closer to her skin is the ball gown bodice, and the ball gown skirt is made of something light and packable like chiffon, which is then folded up around her torso to hide under the “rags” top, which has some sort of quickrelease on it at the shoulders and usually the front (check on burlesque rigging for suggestions on that) Sometimes the rag bodice is rigged to drop essentially around the actress’s legs and hide under the longer ball skirt, but other times it comes completely off and they drop it to hide behind something.  I believe in one version of Cinderella they also springload her tiara, so the weight of a cape hood keeps it down until the cape comes off, then it springs up. 

The downside of the contained transformations are that you can only pack so much fabric onto a body before they look lumpy and weird, so often shows are blocked to have the transformation happen, then for Cinderella to run off, change into the actual giant magic ballgown, and then show up at the actual ball, so the visual is “I transformed magically” but to get her into the sturdier danceable spectacle gown, there’s a second change backstage.

Really, most “magic” like this is entirely cooked up on the fly- there are a few standard tricks and then it’s a lot of “that didn’t work, but why,” trial and error until you get to one that seems to succeed on cue more often than it doesnt.

RIGHT???? johnny fucking pining for dutch like I always knew he had done. johnny remembering their kiss and the fact that his fake wife used his chest as a pillow. yknow while in bed wearing just a slip bc she was his WIFE.

seriously tho I had felt the first two episodes were somewhat lacklustre, and then this one came and completely knocked me off my feet. and even shippy stuff aside, I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who was the lady and I felt like I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, and that was a nice change. this felt more like my show, about kickass bounty hunters, but sorta weathered and older but not necessarily wiser, y’know? 

if they keep up the quality of the eps after this latest one I may be able to forgive the mediocrity of the first two. we shall see. fingers crossed some good stuff happens next :D

my favorite moment of the last killjoys episode was definitely when Dutch is talking to D'av about Johnny, obviously. But i loved it because I felt like it really just cemented the fact that John and Dutch's relationship means the most. whether they be platonic or romantic or anything else, their relationship is just so important and amazing. ps. would you mind making a gifset paralleling in 5.05 and 2.05 when Dutch calls John her gravity because I love this show so much

I honestly cannot remember why I started following you, there's been a weird period of time where I wasn't on Tumblr for a good year and a half. I think it was something to do with the Arrowverse shows? I stayed because you are just really chill and cool, compared to the rest of the Arrowverse fandoms which are all pretty toxic to be honest. Also, you got me into Killjoys!! So thank you for that!!

but omg. I so hear you about the flarrowverse fandoms being really toxic and egh and that’s why for the most part I’ve been quite distanced from the fandom recently. I’m glad you think I’m chill altho I wonder if I really am lol.

re: that smut fic. it’s. coming along nicely. pun intended. I probably post too many sneak peeks so am gonna keep this one to myself until it’s finished but as soon as it’s done I’m gonna post so watch this space :D
