Really, she wasn’t quite sure why she did it.He had looked exhausted – war-weary and pale, his shock of sunset-colored hair too stark a contrast against the deathly, washed-out white of the infirmary room. The bandages covering his injuries had long since lost their pristine, untouched color, dipped in specs of red that, much unlike those unruly locks, looked far too out of place on the older teen to offer comfort. The first time Lenalee had walked in to find him like this, too still, too quiet, she had experienced quite a shock – now, hours later, the other was awake and the familiar grin on his lips weak but no less mischievous. Of course she had scolded him for being so reckless, her concerns easily coming to the fore in the form of aggravation, but he had only laughed it off, taken her words and played around with them until he could toss them back to her in the form of a taunting, suggestive remark.
Lenalee didn’t admit to it, but to see him put forth his usual behavior despite his weakened state soothed the frayed edges of her nerves. Reassurance was a gift in these dire times, and knowing that this piece of her world would not yet die and take a part of her with it on its way down allowed her to feel calm where here had been calamity disturbing her mind before. So when she noticed that the redhead was beginning to slip away into unconsciousness, sentences never quite meeting their end anymore and the edges of his smile blurring into something softer, weaker – that was when she allowed herself to express her relief without restraint. Slender fingers brushed stray bangs out of the redhead’s forehead, the woman leaning down to press her lips to the newly bared skin in a gesture as gentle as it was affectionate.
“Get some rest, idiot,” she commanded, yet her quiet voice held only tenderness and even the insult sounded more like an endearment than a negative term. She didn’t look at him to see his reaction, but straightened up instead and turned to leave as heat rose to her cheeks unbidden. “I’ll … see you later.”And if a new shade of red joined the assortment of scarlet hues surrounded by startling white – if it settled on Lavi’s cheeks as a lone, once more alert eye blinked at her departing back in unmasked, flustered surprise – well … Lenalee remained unaware.
