The ‘Postcard Drawings’, 2019 all of the same scale, are to be seen as something in between a sculpture and a recognizable image. The slippage of the painted structures are allowed to meander beyond the postcard’s frame purely to create a dialogue with the wall surface. Aikaterini Gegisian collage studies of the project ‘A Small Guide to the Invisible Seas’ 2015, are based on photographic albums of Soviet Armenia, Turkey and Greece, dating from the 1960s to the early 1980s. The collages, whether acting as documentation of changing landscapes, or as tourist catalogues, function above all, as nation- building mechanisms. They narrate through photography an image of each nation. They narrate through photography an image of each nation. The whole project as well as the book, offers a metaphysical and gendered reading of the nation-building agents; while re-shaping the original material and putting forth readings that both mimic narratives of cosmic inception (the birth of the nation) and echo feminine and masculine metaphors (mother Armenia, the father of the nation). 👉 ‘Mycorial Theatre’, 2013, Ed. 2017: ChromaLuxe, metal print, wood, 120 x 44 x 5 cm @georgiasagri on view at ‘Attempts to Escape’ @artseen_contemporary > Open today 3:30-8:00pm 💫 Come by! “Georgia Sagri navigates the murky relationships between the artist’s body and her body of work, subjectivity and persona, original and reproduction with equal parts humor and severity. Her multi-facetted work expands across performance, video work, and sculpture. Her staged objects, as the presented work ‘The Mycorial Theatre’, 2013, are doubled modules, where each I or self can be “cross-eyed.” This effect, often produced theat-rically, reorders the collective gaze to be subverted through a “catas-trophe of emo-tions.” Her sculptures may also claim per-formance as a medium through allowing multiple perceptions of viewership. While retaining their freedom to exist autonomously, they invite the viewers’ movements and decisions of how the sculptures could be viewed. “ Her sculpture, constitutes a double sided ‘situation’: on one side it portrays the artist herself while trying to escape out of a real-life situation. On the other side, a manifesto, in the form of a text is presented, which sets the ground for her ‘Myconial Theatre’. A set of relations between information/concept and performance / documentation, is thus created, while the equivocal nature of this is being highlighted. The notion of a theatre that moves beyond its conventional boarders is explored.
