All You Need Is Love...and Family.
One of the staff on my team in Hays CISD, Caleb, lost everything last Friday in the flash floods that ripped through central Texas. His apartment had around 22″ of water in it and his belongings were all ruined. Left with just his car, a mattress, and his clothes he showed up at work on Monday like nothing had happened. He was there, engaged, happy, committed to learning, and to helping other educators (just check out this selfie I tweeted on Monday).
Shortly after this training was the first time I learned he had lost all he had. I was shocked, and, honestly, a bit caught off-guard that we didn’t know already and that he had slogged through the weekend without our help.
But here is what this got me thinking. There is so much negativity in our current climate online. Horror stories and news reports designed to create a culture of fear fill the web and create this false narrative that we unconsciously live inside. The thing is, we are actually surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands, of people who are able and willing to show their love for their neighbor, coworker, friend, or even acquaintance.
Caleb is proof of this. How? Today marks month three that Caleb has worked in my district. 90 days. And guess what? He is loved! He is family! Don’t believe me well then, as Bruno Mars says, ”just watch”!
In 20 hours this family known as Hays CISD has raised over $1200 for Caleb. That’s $60 every hour coming in to help him. Our goal was only $1000, but he needs so much more. So I challenge you to give. I challenge you to show that this world is a place filled with more positive than negative. Let’s use Caleb to show the world that all you need is love...and family! Bienvenidos a la familia de Hays CISD Caleb!
