Infodump time in naddpod is always a good time.

The gods abandoned the world a long time ago and humans are just pretending to carry out their will in order to gain more power for themselves. I know it has been said already, but Murph's religious background carries so much truth about the world into his campaigns that on one side hurts a lot, but also helps me and the fans in general to come to terms with a lot of shit going on. Through the characters dealing with these kinds of revelations the audience can make peace with them too.
