Terrence: Well, shall we?

Sadie: Sure, Papa.

Terrence: Ignore you’re mother. You know how she doesn’t like change.

Sadie: I know.

Terrence: This will be good for the all of us. I’m sure of it. 

Sadie: If you say so...

Terrence: It will be alright my dear. -pats her arm- Just try not to listen to your mother.

Terrence smiles at his daughter, she can’t quite return the smile.

Elyse: This is where we will be living?

Terrence: It’s what we can afford, Ellie. You know we couldn’t stay. -quieter- Not after what happened.

Elyse: Don’t remind me. It’s bad enough that I’ll have to live here! At least we have a maid.

Terrence sighs heavily as his wife goes into the house.

Elyse: Sadie tomorrow you and I are going to go see if we can’t get all the gossip around town.

Sadie: So soon?

Elyse: We don’t have time to waste! You should have been married already by now anyway.

Terrence: Elyse.

Elyse: Well it’s true. But you are right, no point dwelling in the past. 

Florence: Here’s your drink, sir. Can I get you anything else?

Elyse: Surely you can’t possibly want to stay in this house for the rest of your life?

Terrence: That will be all Florence, thank you very much. Sadie, dear. You’re mother is right. Don’t you want to start your life?

Sadie: I suppose.

Elyse: Good. Now, eat up quickly. You need to be well rested for tomorrow. 

Sadie: Yes, mother.

Elyse: I spoke with the woman who runs the dress shop in town and she says that there are only two eligible men in town! And no more eligible young women! So, if they want to have a family at all someone will have to marry Sadie! 

Terrence: Good, good.

Elyse: And even better, Sadie already has met one of the men! 

Terrence: Really?

Elyse: Yes, yes. Thomas Brereton. I assume he went up to talk to her because he is already smitten!

Terrence: Brereton? Well, I’m sure that will be very easy to arrange. I am now working for his father. We had a good chat today about Sadie.

Elyse: Excellent! I shall make arrangements for us to visit Thomas and his mother soon, Sadie.

Sadie: Mmhmm.

Terrence: How did you find young Thomas?

Sadie: He was fine.. Polite.

Terrence: Well good! And Thomas is the better choice, Ellie?

Elyse: Well. I think it would be best. The only other bachelor in town is this Lord Marin. He lives up in that grand house on the hill. Apparently he doesn’t really go out in public. But he donates generously to the towns upkeep. Brereton is more realistic, and besides I heard that the Lord has quite the unnerving presence.

Terrence: In that case we best leave him be.

Elyse: I think so.

Sadie sighs quietly.

Florence humming

Terrence: Hello? Anyone home?

Elyse: Yes, yes! You are late for dinner!

Terrence: Forgive me, dear. How did it go today?

Elyse: Sit and we’ll tell you. Florence! You can serve dinner now!

Florence: Yes, ma’am. Welcome home sir.

Terrence: Thank you Florence. Well?

Terrence: Thank you, Florence. You were saying dear?

Elyse: Yes, yes, yes. So I was in the tea shop and all of a sudden we were all given invitations!

Terrence: That’s nice, what for?

Elyse: For a ball. To be held at Lord Marin’s manor.

Terrence: My goodness! What’s the occasion?

Elyse: Get this: It’s a celebration of Sadie’s engagement!

Sadie: What?!

Elyse: I know! Everyone was beside themselves! Apparently this has never happened before! How did he even know about the engagement?

Sadie: Well.. I-I went to his manor the day I was inviting people to the wedding. 

Elyse: You clever girl! 

Sadie: Clever?

Elyse: Oh isn’t it obvious? He must be jealous that he was never in the running for your hand. Oh this is wonderful! We must go to town tomorrow and buy some new dresses for the occasion!

Sadie: Sure...

Elyse continues to babble happily. 

Sadie’s Thoughts: Perhaps they did just need to be treated with some kindness... It’s just a coincidence I’m sure. No relation to the .... dreams.

Florence humming.

Elyse hurries into the dining room late.

Terrence: Ah, there you are dear. I was getting worried.

Elyse: Oh, no need to worry. Florence? Dinner!

Florence: Coming in just a moment ma’am.

Terrence: Why is there no need for worry?

Elyse: I have heard the most exciting news!

Mother wouldn’t hesitate to send me back if she knew it was happening again.

I can’t go back.

I would talk to my Father if I didn’t think he would tell her....
