The Tenth Doctor Adventures Vol. 2 Review
I was honestly thinking about making a review for each one of the Audio Dramas, but after listening to all of them (twice, may I add) I decided that there weren't enough differences between the three of them, and I could summarize in one long review the three of them. So here it is.
I know that this is Volume 2, and that I skipped over the first volume, but I think I just wanted to keep myself chronological with the extended media. Next month I’ll do the first volume and I’ll start with the novels with Martha as a companion. I’ve read some of them and the quick reads but there are more than with Rose so it’s taking me longer to get to them. (And let’s not start with Donna, which I haven’t read anything at all! Shame on me!)
So, in order, let’s start with Infamy of the Zaross.
The premise of this audio was funny, a staged alien invasion for a television program called “Take Me To Your Leader”? Hilarious. Again, Jackie gets amazing character development, and her dialogues are really funny. There’s also this bit where she calls Rose and goes to voicemail and then she appears with the Doctor because they’ve been hiding, waiting for her to make the call, because, well, time machine.
There’s this character, a friend of Jackie’s, and she’s an asshole. But thanks to her you can also see why Jackie has the type of personality she has, and you can notice better how much she has changed from the first time you saw her.
Also, the familiarity the Doctor and Rose have is amazingly translated in the conversations they have. You can also see how much fun they have saving the world and having their little adventures, for them it’s really just the bits in between. The quips the Doctor makes about Jackie and vice versa also give this air of mother-in-law/son-in-law relationship that’s just priceless.
And the Doctor saying to Rose “I’ve got you, I’ve got the TARDIS, what else would I need?” The last comment made by the Doctor in this audio is so meta, I loved it.
Next, The Sword of the Chevalier.
“Nobody bungee jumps to their wedding, Doctor.” Omg, they’re going to bungee jump to their wedding, aren’t they? The idiots. Also, Miss wander-off Tyler, and playing dress-up, Rose as a devil and the Doctor as a harlequin. The Doctor sings!! (even if you don’t hear it in the audio :/) All paired off with a queer historical figure as the Chevalier d’Éon, and the importance the Doctor gives to her pronouns is marvelous. A story about spies and aliens, really simple.
And last, Cold Vengeance.
In this one, the Doctor and Rose face the Ice Warriors. The Ice Warriors always feel a bit more classic era Doctor Who but they work really well in the new era. We also get a glimpse of the Time Lord Victorious when the Doctor thinks Rose may be dead, and that maybe he can travel in time to get her back.They have pre-made plans memorized (escape plan 29??? How many do they have??). The Doctor keeps forgetting that there’s people in danger other than Rose.
So this is where the whole Rose Tyler is a social justice warrior came from?? @alwaysdramatizing‘s communist Rose post was born from this???
General review? Not enough Rose, needs more Rose. Everything’s better with Rose (definitely something the Doctor has thought). I always feel like the Tenth Doctor was always lighter with less burdens before he lost Rose, after that he always seemed a little bit sadder, a little bit hardened. Still, short and enjoyable, that’s what the audios are. No deeper plot or anything. I mean, if you know about the audio dramas you’re already way too deep down the rabbit hole of this fandom, so you might as well embrace it.
