help: manual voice modulation in audio design?

hi podcast community!!

my sister and i are starting a little passion project and while we can't afford to hire any actors for it, we would love to have different voices appear. the idea was to record everything ourselves and edit it, harlan guthrie style. but i'm new to sound design and struggling to find resources, given that the whole internet is now overrun by "try our ai voice changer!" websites. i'm unsure how to feel about those, since it's not like they're completely replacing human voice acting, but it still gives me an icky feeling and just out of principle i'd prefer to learn how to do it myself. grateful for any tips and tutorials!!

hey squad its me your local audio nerd i am here to tell you what i learned about tøp's mics after going on a deep-dive to try and discover what they use

because i am not that deep into it (yet) we're focusing on the three vocal mics the boys use, josh's talkback mic, and the ride kid mic! i might look into josh's kit later.

this is a really bad screenshot but if you're an audio nerd chances are high you already know what this is: say hello to the shure SM58!

This is probably the one on the right, an AD2/SM58 - our lovely ride kid is covering where the channel display would be, but the shape of bottom of the transmitter seems to be a good match.

2. josh's talkback mic

the more eagle-eyed among you may have already identified this guy: the SM58 once again! this one is wired. as the lovely watchmefall pointed out, drum island does not have a talkback mic! i am unsure if the b-stage kits have one.

3. tyler's glowing mic

you guessed it! say hello to our good friend the shure SM58. this was actually confirmed in an article from 2017 - they replaced some of its innards with LED strips.

nobody talk to me about the amount of stress it's poor xlr is under every time tyler swings it around. a piece of my soul dies.

4. tyler's normal mic

i originally thought this was a ULXD2/K11

but i was wrong! the same article that confirmed that the glowing mic is a gutted SM58 also tells us what the other mic tyler uses is: a KSM9HS capsule on a wireless transmitter

the major difference here is that little circle bit on the grill, which we can see is absent

and now, the moment we've all been waiting for, the microphone that sent me down this rabbithole in the first place:

5. jocals mic!

this guy is tricky. you'd think that no high-quality vocal microphone is that small. HOWEVER. shure sells just the mic capsules! so our first mission is to determine the capsule being used. this guy is very square, so its not a SM58 or a K11. my best guess is the SM86 capsule, shown below attached to a handheld transmitter.

the SM86 is pretty square, so it's a pretty good guess. there are probably other options because so many of shure's mics are very similar - hence the mixup i had with tyler's main mic earlier.

the transmitter is actually the easier part of this. since its so tiny, there are very few options.

meet the SLXD3+, a very small wireless transmitter. this would fit perfectly into the clip of a mic stand without having anything hanging out the back that could hit things. josh moves the mic towards and away from him, so it's probably important that his mic not knock into his cymbals and such. hence, my bet is that this is the transmitter on the jocals mic.
