how he comes off as a total dork/jerk, but actually really cares about people. he's a lot more complex than some people give him credit for!

the fact that he gets very protective/angry over said people that he cares about. (also about his height, because it's ridiculously funny)

his drive; numerous times through his and al's journey is he told '"give up!" "it's impossible" "we'll kill you if you pursue this" upon dozens of other things to deter him, but he never loses hope. he always keeps trying, even if he has to be more careful or use more unconventional methods or hits a dead end; he never really gives up. he's so persistent and i love it it's so wonderful

his character development; granted, it's not huge but it's slight and noticeable that he becomes less rash and more intelligent and level-headed while managing to still keep his personality in tact. i can't completely phrase it correctly, but he just grows up and it's wonderful

he isn't perfect; he's far, far from it and never proclaims to be better, or some kind of god. he's recognizes that he's only a human and he's weak and he acknowledges his weaknesses and points them out and that's rare for a main character and i love that he can see his flaws and still have motivation. it's so wonderful
