Samuel wakes to a kisses pressed to his freckled cheek, each careful and cautious as if the culprit of such affections still feels a pang of guilt for waking him at the crack of dawn. But August just can't contain his excitement any longer, nor the beaming sunny smile on his face as he offers a small box to his beloved.
Nestled in its bed of cotton is a pair of decorative cast iron keys, undoubtedly hand-forged by the blacksmith himself given their craftsmanship. But if the intricacies and cleanliness of every edge, every curve of their structures are not a blatant-enough testimony to the bearish hands that molded them, then the lifelike sculpted animal portraits for handles are: one adorned with a bison, and the other with a bear, each with a space carved out for the other. When the keys are joined, the heads interlock, as if the two animals are right at home resting against one another so very peacefully.
"I know we're still savin' up to build that new home, but I was thinkin' 'bout these an' couldn't stop 'til I made 'em." August flashes Sam another smile, one that is just a hint apologetic, as he presses another kiss to his lips. "Happy Birthday, darlin'. One day we'll have the door an' lock t'match these. I promise."
================
Opening the box, Samuel holds up the set of dual keys, admiring their obvious craftsmanship; the clear signs that make them unmistakably August’s work and the subtle nuances that mark them out as one of Wilder’s finest pieces.
“So beautiful…” He whispers, holding them aloft, to watch the sunlight glint against them, before the interlocking position renders them one; so symbolic of their union; bear and bison.
Sam’s eyes slowly close as he welcomes the first kiss of the day, knowing there will be many more that follow, especially as it’s his Birthday and August has closed up his Blacksmith’s workshop for the day; a rear occurrence which gifts them more time to spend together before Sam is forced to leave his search of another bounty to pursue.
“We got the timber August and the tools, we just got to find the land.” He smiles, entwining their hands as he curls up against him; his gentle giant.
Running his fingers through August’s thick chest of hair, Samuel sighs contentedly as he thinks on it; how good it will be to have a place of their own, with a little bit of land to grow crops and to tame and keep horses, some livestock too. These days it’s all he ever thinks about, especially when he’s out on the trail hunting bounties, separated from his lover just to earn a decent living.
“Just remember, everything we need August, we’ve got right here, the rest, it’s just dressin.”

❄ – a kiss in the snow // this can be for the RDR verse if u want 👀👀👀
“We ain’t getting’ through that.”
Samuel has to shout to be heard over the howl of the wind which is blowing fierce and is loaded with ice, ice which has already begun to collect around Samuel’s mouth, clinging to his beard. It feels like frozen daggers stabbing his red raw skin and he can only grimace in the face of it. He had thought they would be able to make it over the mountain pass to travel to warmer climes, but it seems the weather has other ideas; it’s turned nasty and there’s no sign of it letting up. This is near on a blizzard and with the snow so thick at the pass, they really have no option but to turn back.
Easing Diego back down the hill, careful of his footing in the thick snow, Samuel stops beside August, drawing his horse close.
“We got to head back to the cabin August. How bout’ you head over there, get the fire goin’ again and I’ll head down to the trading post, see if I can find us some food. Can’t hunt in weather like this.”
Leaning over, steading himself on Gus’s leg, he plants a shaky, freezing kiss against his frigid lips.
“We’ll be okay Wilder, we’ve got through worse.”
I can never take too many pics of this beautiful boy

@forgedwild said: ⚠ – a kiss before a battle // for Samuel bc I’m a predictable bitch when it comes to my couple bonding of choice
Samuel has Diego doing an impossibly slow trot as heads away from the Blacksmith’s workshop, only a few more steps and he won’t be able to see Gus standing there, hammer in one hand, waving with the other as he bids him farewell. Sam’s lips are still warm with the kiss they shared only a moment ago, but as the wind rises up and robs him of the sensation, it suddenly occurs to Sam that it’s just not enough; he can’t leave yet, he needs more.
Turning the Mustang in the middle of the street, so roughly it causes a thick cloud of dust to rise up around him, Samuel thunders back down the main street, nearly taking out a nearby drunkard who has just stumbled out of the saloon. Grinding to halt, Samuel dismounts in a singular fluid motion, striding towards the blacksmith with urgent purpose to back him up against the workshop wall, hands clasping to his bearded face as he leans up on his toes to kiss August hard and fierce; he needs it; that taste to tide him over, that sensation of rough hair scraping at his lips and hands hot and heavy at his waist. One more kiss before he goes, one more kiss before he rides into battle to face an outlaw most wouldn’t dare challenge.
“For luck.” He whispers breathlessly, grinding himself against Gus’ thigh, to placate the semi in his tight pants, which threatens to put an end to this trip all together. “Guess this’ll keep till I get back.” He jokes, thrusting the Blacksmith’s hand down between his thighs to feel the heat there, cultivated by no more than a simple rough kiss. “Don’t be missin’ me now Gusy, I’ll be back soon, I promise.”

March 16, 1862
Dearest August,
After returning from Mace’s hole, upon enquiry, I was informed by Captain Madison that you have been medically discharged due to injury. While Madison would not disclose the nature of how you have found yourself infirmed, he did feel it prudent to state that it was not a condition the nature of which is life threatening. This news of course was met with my immediate relief, a relief which is only surpassed by my deepest regret that I did not arrive back to the company camp in time to see you before you left.
As I was aware it was unlikely you would return to Hinton upon discharge, Lieutenant Turner suggested I send my correspondence to a foreman he knows at the Comstock Silver Mining Corporation where you worked before enlisting. This man, a Mr Avery B Anderson, has kindly agreed by telegram to pass my letter to you upon its arrival in Virginia City, should you find yourself there at any point within the next few months.
My dearest friend, there are no words that can express how much I will miss seeing your face, or listening to your tall tales. Nor can I fathom how our company will function without your particular culinary skills in the Mess tent. The kind of food you cook August is the kind capable of keeping a man on his feet for longer than he might otherwise, the kind that comforts too. They say an army marches on its stomach and I fear without you here, we can only now rely on our feet, which are already so weary.
I will think of you fondly in your absence August, remembering all the times we have spent together, times where you have managed to manifest a smile on my face, despite the horrors I have seen that show no sign of ceasing. Do you remember the night we sat on the floor of the mess tent, eating cooking apples like we’d picked them fresh off the tree, laughing like a pair of schoolboys waiting to see if we’d be chased by a surly farmer? You said we was happy as a pair of clams and I remember thinking on the fact I’d never seen a clam, but that they must be very joyous creatures indeed.
Do you remember the night I returned from Mace’s hole, covered in blood, guts and God only knows what else? I cannot say I have ever found myself in such a miserable state before. I was a shadow of myself truth be told, couldn’t talk, could barely move as I recall it but you helped me wash August, made me eat and held me until I could finally sleep. I will never forget that night, the night you brought me back to myself with your good patience and kindness.
We are moving off in a few days, up towards New Mexico on the orders of Col. Slough and while none of us have been given the full details of what we will encounter there, I know the men are restless. In truth, I am just as restless, with 100 men sleeping around me, all thinking the worst but none of them saying so, it’s difficult to feel any other way. We have seen the extra artillery and recruitment of additional men. Whatever is planned, I feel it will be significant in this campaign and while I have never feared my death August, I must admit I do fear never seeing your sweet face again.
I hate to dwell on it so, but should death be creeping up on me August, it occurs to me that this might be the last chance I have to conversate with you in any capacity. This being so, it would be foolish of me not to take this time to tell you that I hold real affection for you August Wilder, the illuminating sort that makes a man think about the kind of life he’d like to live should he return unharmed from all this awfulness. While truthfully I admit I do not yet know what kind of life I’d like to live August, I do know that should fate afford me the chance, I’d like to live that life with you.
I hope you do not think it a foolish notion, many might I suppose, but I think of you often and warmly August Wilder and in your absence, it is my return to you that fills my daily thoughts and gets me through these darkest of days. You know I have never been a religious man, but I’d like to believe that if I do not see you again in this life, we will find each other again in the next.
It is my wildest hope that you will wait for me August and that this letter finds you in good health and good temperament. I will miss you mightily until we meet again, my dearest and most precious friend.
Yours ever faithfully,
Samuel Oliver Silas.
