aesthetic shifts across four time periods in a mecha planet's TTRPG life

losing my mind at the thematic/tonal shifts between the various eras we've explored in play across Aureate's history...

Gilded Sands, our original Beam Saber game, cast our bitter mercenaries-turned-revolutionaries as unlikely agents of liberation on a planet that had kinda gone to hell under 100 years of occupation and orbital blockade. there's two great touchstones: the Harebrained Schemes Battletech game (gritty mech mercenaries caught up in a civil war) and the awesome run-down desert industrial aesthetics of Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak (i literally stole the Carrier for a one-shot i was lucky enough to play in. tech was large, clunky, often salvaged and shitty - and we loved it.

then, a prequel one-shot - the Cobalt Revolt - took us back over 250 years, to when the old empire (the Seven's Vow Coalition) still stood strong, and a brazen rebellion rose up against it. this was a shiny high-tech golden age that Gilded Sands had long since fallen from; it was also a suicide mission against impossible odds, and so it wore the Rogue One inspiration on its sleeve.

we followed that up with Broken Promise, 15 years after Gilded Sands, with our scrappy little planetary revolution having grown up into a group capable of throwing down in space. the mecha had to be faster, leaner, cooler, while fleet battles were an essential itch to scratch - because this was transparently the Zeta Gundam to GS's Mobile Suit Gundam, after all!

which takes us to today! i'm in the early stages of concepting out the next step - it doesn't have a flashy name yet, but i intend to run it in Songs for the Dusk, a hundred years after the events of Broken Promise. peace has been won, for real! this is a world instead trying to build on the wreckage and scars of everything that came before; it's gone Strange under the weight of all that history, but Strange can be Home, too. i'm leaning a lot on the final Evangelion Rebuild film, 3.0+1.0, in how it depicts mundane life in a nearly-unrecognizable world, and the visual palette of Steven Universe. i'm really, really excited!

Delphi in Summer colors, and Rowan in Autumn. I wanted their outfits to feel light and flowey.

Leobella projects a more formal air with the guards right there center. Meanwhile Xuterra appears more relaxed but is no less careful.
