Introduction

This is a blog which will attempt to document my findings about the Aurënfaie language from Lynn Flewelling’s fantasy series, the Nightrunner series. (My dad is skeptical as to whether the language contains real meaning at all, but the author’s background in languages, a couple of consistencies in the language itself and some linguistics terminology used in the books lead me to believe otherwise). I tried to do so before a few years ago, but I’ve learnt a lot more about languages (and conlangs) since then.
I am currently compiling a compilation of all of the Aurënfaie words and phrases found across the books. I have so far compiled (hopefully) everything in Luck in the Shadows, Stalking Darkness and Casket of Souls, which is available on Google Sheets here. This will be added to as I read through the other books. I have provided the English translation (when available), the context (when not), the word class of the entry is a single word, the book and page in which it first appears, and any extra notes on the word or phrase.
After this has been done, I’ll try to work out the potential phonological inventory of the language, then see if I can work out any grammar.
If this blog is something that interests you, I’d appreciate the follow. Alternatively, if you know of any other information or resources which I haven’t mentioned, that knowledge would also be appreciated. I’ve never met anyone in real life or online who’s read the books, so I’d love to interact with anyone else who likes the series!
