Could you explain what the colors and symbols on the Brazilian flag mean?
Of course! So if you ask any Brazilian the meaning of the flag colors most people will tell you that the Green represents our Forests and Nature, the Yellow represents our Gold and Wealth and the Blue represents the Sky.
That’s not really true though: a relatively unknown fact is that our flag was adopted when Emperor Pedro I declared independence from Portugal in 1822, and the color scheme comes from the colors of the Imperial family: The Green represents the House of Braganza (or Bragança), Pedro’s imperial house (that was actually also the same Imperial house as his father, King João VI of Portugal). The Yellow is the color of the imperial house of Habsburg as his wife, Maria Leopoldina was a Habsburg.
When the republicans took over they “changed” the meaning of the flag and spread a more nationalistic one. They also traded the Imperial Coat of Arms for the blue circle.

The blue circle is pretty cool though. Each star represents a State, and the republicans arranged it to look like the sky over Rio de Janeiro (then capital city) on the night of November 15, 1889, the day of the Proclamation of the Republic. If you look closely, you can spot some constellations on it, such as the Southern Cross. As more states were created we had to add new stars to the flag.
Over the blue circle you can read our motto: “Ordem e Progresso” which means “Order and Progress”. It was inspired, on Auguste Comte’s positivist motto: “L'amour pour principe et l'ordre pour base; le progrès pour but”
We Brazilians love our flag, it’s unique and very beautiful. We even have an anthem just for it. Also I’m glad they didn’t change it during the Dictatorship.
