Dude Looks Like a Lady - Undercover Cop AU
He had spent hours for this mission, this target, even though it had been the last mission that he wanted. The dangerous plan was to gain information from a gangster who would likely cheerfully murder anything that vaguely resembled a cop, and having already lost several good men to them, his unit decided that a pretty woman might be considered less immediately intimidating and be able to recover more intel. The plan was to get the unfortunate cop in quickly, flirt, grab some information, and then pull them out again, and all seemed feasible and fine. There were many competent women in the department, and Matthias was set to wish them the best of luck.
What he hadn’t counted on was ranking and reputation.
And so it was that he found himself inside a bar on the wrong side of town, with his face itching from makeup and his attention split halfway between finding his target and halfway between walking properly in a dress. He observed the way that women walked, and had found it difficult, having to train out of holding his shoulders stiffly as he tended to, having to learn how to shift his hips in a way that didn’t look completely and utterly unnatural. Then there were the gestures, which tended to be more fluid than a man’s, and most troublingly, the voice. Matthias did have a voice in the higher register for a man, but it would never in a thousand years be mistaken for female. He had to think of vocal pitch in addition to his stutter, and all of those things collided sharply together.
Makeup accentuated some features and downplayed others, and although the department had tried for hair extensions, Matthias flatly refused. If he was going to be forced to play a woman for this little intel grab, he’d do it with his own hair. Women had short hair these days anyway, right?
He sipped nervously at his drink and scanned the crowd for his target.
