Austin Cunningham - Made To Last

Quarto album per Austin Cunningham, cantante ed autore che divide equamente il suo amore tra il nativo Texas e Nashville, tra rock e country music. La sua attività compositiva è stata un susseguirsi di grandi soddisfazioni (presumo anche dal punto di vista remunerativo) e molti sono stati gli interpreti che hanno scelto le sue canzoni, da Tracy Byrd a Kathy Mattea, da Dolly Parton alle Judds solo per citarne alcuni. I suoi dischi non sono però così mainstream e hanno sempre mostrato un feeling e una grinta degna dei migliori nomi texani. Non sfugge a questa regola “Made To Last”, anzi grazie alla splendida produzione di Dan Baird (uno che sa ‘roccare’ veramente) risulta il suo sforzo più riuscito e pregevole. Austin Cunningham è in grandissima forma sia a livello vocale sia per quanto riguarda il suo talento di scrittore. Country, rock e una spruzzata di blues sono alla base delle canzoni di “Made To Last”, tutte da sottolineare per grande verve e mordente, suonate come Dio comanda. “This Town’s On My Nerves” e “Sad Country Song” sembrano le due facce della stessa medaglia in un rapporto intenso di amore/odio con Nashville. Eccellenti sono anche “Take Me Back To Ft. Worth”, grande celebrazione della ‘cowtown’ texana, “Catherine”, “Go Easy On Yourself” (texana fino al midollo), “The Last Great Dj” (…’kill me with a ballad ‘bout a love gone wrong/then heal me with a Johnny Cash song…’….magnifica!), “Don’t Distract Me (When I’m Drinkin’)”(una country song ruvida e tagliente), la amara “Recipe For Disaster”, “Rock-n-Roll Tattoo Girl” (con la mano di Dan Baird a ‘sporcare’ il suono) e la conclusiva “Try Jesus”. George Jones and Jesus Songwriters: Lance Miller/Austin Cunningham Performed by: Lance Miller Album: Back in the New School From the very first few seconds of this song, you know it is country. That sliding steel guitar introduces us to the hook 'George Jones and Jesus are two heroes of mine'; It sounds like a country classic. As the song progresses, Lance explains that, at certain times in ones life, George Jones can 'ease the hurt', and while he may not be a saviour, he is still a hero in ones life. Lyrically this song is laced with clever contrasting imagery of George Jones along with smoky bars, and religion. Lance Millers voice is strong, reinforcing the lyric, and it certainly doesn't hurt that his voice is reminiscent of Merle Haggard. You may not be aware of Lance as a vocalist- despite appearing on season two of Nashville Star, and opening for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's 2007 Soul2Soul tour. However, you will recognise his songs that have graced our country charts, including Beer with Jesus- Thomas Rhett, Shinin' on Me- Jerrod Niemann, Beautiful Everytime- Lee Brice. Tim McGraw has been quoted as saying that Lance is a great songwriter, and recorded the incredible Can't Hurt a Man with Randy Travis, another song penned by Lance Miller. Radio friendly Country music has grown distant from more traditional country that was prominent on the radio up to the early 2000s. But there is definitely a movement of artists, think Jamey Johnson and The Pistol Annies, moving back towards those more traditional country roots. Lance fits really well into that category, and if you don't know Lance as an artist yet, you should take a listen, because I think we're going to be hearing a lot more from him in the future.
