i-is that my boy caleb stimming with his lil amber stone? is that the magnificent fire wizard boy that i would commit tax fraud for very overtly doing something that i, as an autistic-adhd person, do all the time???????
since i met caleb as a character i’ve always had that small, way in the back of the mind kinda feeling that the boy is aspy. he gets hyper focused on things; when he’s good at something he’s very very good at it; needs to stim or he has trouble focusing; likes to observe the situation before making a decision; sometimes struggles with eye contact and social interaction; tends to hide behind his friends when it comes to interaction and meeting new people, waiting for them to interact first; all things that i do in my day to day life (though i am very high functioning autistic so my experience isn’t the same as someone functioning on a different level or in a different way to me) that i’ve now seen one of my favourite characters in pop culture do.
so often, the representation of autistic people in pop culture is awful (take sheldon cooper for example, the big bang theory made me feel ashamed to be autistic because of how sheldon was treated, portrayed and the fact that he was literally just there so the other characters could make fun of autism and claim “””””””but we’re being inclusive”””””””) but there’s something about caleb widogast that i relate to on a whole new level that feels like the representation of people like me that i’ve needed to see for a long time.
even if caleb isn’t explicitly autistic or doesn’t canonically have adhd, it’s so wonderful and so regenerative to see one of my favourite characters exhibit traits that i myself have.
thank you, liam o’brien ❤️
