Midas could have killed me
I’m kind of spending tonight doing a salted earth rampage against Midas, the auto repair service company. I gave them two days after my initial complaint, and now I’m spamming them on every social media platform I have access to.
On Saturday 10/20, I took my car in to have the brake pads replaced and get an oil change. They had a “free oil change with brake service” deal, so I figured I’d try them. It was a little before noon when I got there. The guy at the desk took my keys and my number and said he’d call me in 20-40 minutes with an estimate if I wanted to go get something to eat. Sure, ok, I know the area pretty well and there are some good places to eat. Less than an hour seemed reasonable. I walked to a nearby poki place. I ordered and ate and read a little bit and an hour passed, with no phone call. Whatever, they were probably busy. I walked back.
The guy acted like he *had* called me. “Here’s what’s up with your brake pads, here’s the estimate, it’ll probably take us another hour.” Again, ok, they had a lot of cars to work on and I could walk over to the T-Mobile store and figure out what was going on with my bill with them. That took about 40 minutes. No word. I walked over to Starbucks, got a drink, read a little more. An hour passed, no word. I’d run out of things to do in the area, so I walked back. And waited in the waiting room for another hour or so. It was almost 4 by the time they were done with my car. I paid, and drove home. I noticed a little bit of a rattling noise, but beyond “oh, that’s weird,” I didn’t really think about it.
On Sunday 10/21 the front left caliper almost came off while I was driving. I ran a couple errands in the morning, the rattling sound still there but not alarming. In the late afternoon, I went to pick up my boyfriend for our DND game at a friend’s house. This was the first time I’d been on the freeway since the repair. Nothing noticeable *on* the freeway, but between the exit and my boyfriend’s house, the rattling sound was definitely worse. Heading back to the freeway, it was starting to become alarming. At the exit for our friend’s house, I started feeling a dragging when I turned right or tried to brake. At this point I was terrified and furious. We limped the car into our friend’s parking lot and parked as close to their apartment as possible. Fortunately, another friend, who is very good with cars, was there and able to help; he removed the tire and we found that the lower bolt wasn't there at all and the upper bolt was coming out. At first he didn’t want me driving anywhere like that. If we’d gone much further, the caliper would have come off and we’d have wrecked. It’s entirely possible we could have died. But I had to work the next morning, and couldn’t afford not to go. We took photos:
and then went to Autozone, where I bought new bolts and my friend put them in so I would be able to get home.
Frankly, I am absolutely livid. I want a full refund of the $245.46 I paid on Saturday, and a reimbursement of $6.48 for the bolts. And a formal apology for endangering me and my boyfriend’s lives.
The next morning (Monday, 10/22), I went back to the store before work and told them what had happened. It was a different guy behind the counter. He took notes and had someone look at my brakes again. I told him I wanted a refund. He said the owner was the only one who could approve that, and he wouldn’t be in until 4, but he’d make sure he saw my complaint and get back to me in a day or so.
It’s the evening of Tuesday 10/23, and I haven’t heard anything. So far I’ve placed complaints on the general website, the store’s website, both their facebooks and their twitter. Tomorrow I’ll start making phone calls.
