"Be honest... if I said I had a small piece of.. someone I assume you had a cordial bond with, but lost, would it be something you would want to have..?" He almost added, 'for sentimental reasons,' but thought better of it. Perhaps that would imply too much vulnerability and emotions, for a bot still adjusting to experiencing and sharing such things.
The medic turned to him with a small, geometric container in his hand, and extended it toward him. Inside, was Breakdown's optic, the one that M.E.C.H. took from him while he was in their clutches. Ratchet had been the last one in possession of it, and still was... Unless Knock Out accepted.
"... You can say no. I am aware it is an odd question. I simply, feel it is appropriate, for me to offer. I kept it during the war in case... a spare part was needed, but that is no longer appropriate." Extra Cybertronian pieces were extremely limited or non-existent for the Autobots back then, after all. — @autobotmedic
Send "be honest…" with a question your muse has been dying to ask mine and they'll answer truthfully.
The container sits between them like an accusation that Knock Out hasn't decided how to interpret. His optics fix on it with detached recognition. It's not part of Breakdown his assistant but a preserved fragment of an aftermath. A long, ugly chain of what was done to what remained of him.
His field coils tight, not with emotion but memory. Something clinical intrudes where sentiment is expected. Irritation follows — not at Ratchet — but at the familiar implication beneath the gesture: that Breakdown must be love and everything tied to him must be grief.
Thinking he's let the silence stretch too long, he looks up. "I've already had what remained of him," he says at last, the words landing flat and unembellished. There's no dramatization or guilt, just fact, however uncomfortable and unsoftened.
Knock Out continues because stopping would mean letting the silence define it. "Silas made sure of that." The name carries its own weight; a procedural horror of something endured, catalogued, and survived.
"I dissected what was left. I analyzed it. I did what was necessary to understand what had been done to him, and to me, by extension."
His gaze drops briefly to his talons, remembering how the abomination of human and Cybertron biology stained them. "...There are those who take issue with my lack of grief," he adds, his voice no less steady. "But I cannot be made to feel something I do not. If you're expecting remorse to accompany that, I will disappoint you."
There's no cruelty in it, just boundary.
Knock Out looks back to the container. "You can dispose of it. Breakdown has been offline for quite some time — I see no value in revisiting ghosts."
A glass sculpture has been left upon his desk, crafted with the greatest of care. Shimmering clear and opaque whites break up the blues and oranges layered within the form. The shape itself appears to be of an elegantly poised feline, seated in an almost hourglass pose.
Having seen Ratchet practicing at glassblowing among similar hobbies, Optimus can easily guess who left the gift. He picks it up with a delicate touch, holding it to the light—it is beautiful, and he will treasure it as a gift from his beloved. He does not fail to notice that the colors match those of their merging sparks.
Fur? Hideous.
Ah, crap. He's accidentally disturbed and upset Ratchet, the worst offense to make. At least, in his eyes it is.
"I'm okay," one tissue is being immediately torn into small pieces, then shoved up the bleeding nostril, "I promise. It just happens sometimes, especially in spring."
"It’s just rain." — @autobotmedic

Cranium adjusting skyward, Smokescreen's optics narrowed to slits at Ratchet's statement. Blinking a few times, the youthful mech forced his frame to relax, allowing the droplets to pelt calmly onto his plating. Oh. It didn't hurt? The rookie observed as they slipped down and conjoined with more, the weight pulling them down his smokey gray paint. Tilting his dome, his baby blue optics sparked with mischief and curiosity. “ Oh. Rain. ” Pressing the tip of his digit into a puddle on the earth below them, a smirk momentarily pushed onto his lips before dispersing. “ So, not like acid storms on Cybertron? ” An innocent inquiry to the old medic, sparing him a short, rounded optic look of pure curiousity.
"..." Oh. He has also been afflicted. It appears Ratchet will have to show physical affection as well, rather than simply leaving his gift quietly. That is not what he planned, but, better not to resist too strongly and risk anything questionable...
The medic provides him with a hug for several moments, and afterward, sets his gift down beside him. It is a mug, handmade, designed with Optimus' hand shape and size in mind. It was glazed in a blend of blue and silver that bled together, with a faint portion of a lyric etched into the silver:
love and understanding
Ratchet has always been a universal constant.
From his days as an archivist, down to the waning years of the war, there was never a time Optimus could think of that Ratchet wasn't there for. The medic's presence was an anchor in a cataclysmic storm, metaphorical and at times, literal. The friendship that blossomed from it was like no other, something cherished, something to be protected.
An example as to why it was so was this act here - his old friend presenting him with a gift, thoughtfully handcrafted and measured out to his size. In addition to it all, an embrace, nothing too over the top given both their current predicaments.
It made his spark ache, in a good way.
He turned the mug over in his servos, regarding the craftsmanship of it.. he almost didn't want to use it to drink from. Would Ratchet not like that, he wondered? If he simply put it in a shelf as decor instead? Perhaps he'll ponder that more later.
"Thank you, Ratchet." Optimus spoke, gazing down at him with a smile, the one who makes his spark ache so.
There was no urge from the mistletoe that hung before his own helm, Ratchet already satisfying any need to give affection through his own action. Yet, Optimus still drew in the medic once more, leaning down and softly ghosting his lips on the ambulance's smoothed helm.
"I will treasure this, dear friend."
