Automagik - Fluorescent Nights â â @automagik #automagik @soulsteprecords #soulsteprecords #funk #dance â â Now that i'm back in the game and have a new set of working NOS Mullard 807s in my amp, I'm BACK ON IT and catching up on some amazing new records including this super green copy of Automagik's new LP, "Fluorescent Nights". It's billed as "music to get your freak on" and the hype sticker warned me to expect early Prince with a touch of MGMT (and honestly, they're right on the money). I'll take it a step further and say that Automagik's polished and playful funk is also not unlike Chromeo at their least ironic and it's just as fun and dancey as anything MGMT did before they did so much acid that they forgot how to dance. I've heard at least one other Automagik album before it and it was a fun ride, but this one seems like we're hearing from a band who has further gelled and found their collective groove and the songwriting chops really shine through on the whole album. There aren't a lot of folks making lighthearted and breezy music right now and it's a shame because of how amazing music can be as an escape from stress, depression, anxiety, and all of the other crappy parts of human life. If you drop the needle on this one when you're in a bad mood, you'll probably feel it all melt away and if anything, it's going to make you pine for the days where you could spend the night in a cramped disco with a million close friends, a room full of warm air, and the best refreshments and vices your paycheck could buy.
