Kendra Thornton, the ultimate travel expert and mother of three, is planning a dream vacation to New York City with some of her closest friends. Looking for a perfect ROOFTOP BAR experience in NYC? We found ourselves at the Ava Lounge at the top of the Dream Hotel in NYC recently and it was a treat! One of my favorite cocktails shown here was a Tomato & Basil Martini. Vodka, muddled cherry tomatoes, fresh lemon and lime juice and a dash of Tobasco. It was to die for. Sipping a cocktail on this rooftop piece of heaven was a highlight of our trip. Great views, friendly staff and not too snooty. A variety of ages and folks hanging out enjoying the view. We will be back!
Here is a link to their cocktail menu.

Lost
Last week I was meeting up with a few work friends after hours to enjoy happy hour at a rooftop bar called Ava Lounge at the Dream Hotel. I was super excited because not only had I gotten to work from home that day, but that I was getting to experience a new restaurant/bar and spend time with new friends.
I'm not sure how familiar most of you are with the city..but I live in the upper east side. Now that I think about it, it's kind of the exact spot where I lived in Tulsa (South Tulsa, almost Jenks). Anyway, there are only a few subways that run from where I live to the midtown/downtown area (4,5,6; mostly just the 6). So, when I get invited to do something that is in midtown or west side, it's a little outside of my familiarity with the subways. I looked this place up, and it was on 57th and 7th-, about 12 blocks, at least, away from the subway stop I normally take. In the summer when I was here last, I would do anything to get to walk 12 blocks because of how nice it was; this is not the case in the winter. So, I looked up how to get to 57th and 7th, and it looked like I could take the 6, transfer to the N and get off at 57th! I thought 'wow, this will be easier than i thought!'. Feeling confident, I got dressed up, and left my apartment for my venture to Ava Lounge. I got on the 6, then got off on 59th where I was about to transfer to the N train. I was then presented with two options: "N to Astoria" or "N to Brooklyn". I had no idea where Astoria was, but I knew I didn't want Brooklyn, so I was forcefully scooted onto the N train going towards Astoria. I then realized that the next stop on this train was "queensboro plaza".....uh....what? I got off at Queensboro plaza realizing that I was absolutely not going where I wanted. I looked in front of me and saw the 7 train and it looked like it was going towards "Times Square". I hopped on. This was a mistake, once again. I asked the only pleasant looking person on the train if I was going towards 60th, she said "yes, but 60th in queens". QUEENS!?!?!
I noticed that the train was suddenly outdoors, not underground, and that we had passed over a bridge, and the parts of town were getting sketchier looking. I tried to remain calm and not freak out (most of you know that is difficult for me when I feel lost). This girl was nice enough to tell me how to get back to where I wanted to be. after traveling by subway for an hour and a half, I finally made it to my destination (6 trains later).
Just yesterday I looked at the map of the area and noticed that Queens is kind of far away from where I lived.....a little scary, but thankfully it was only 6pm, so it wasn't dark and terrifying. Although I learned the hard way, I now know to NEVER TAKE A TRAIN TO ASTORIA. Ever. Ever. Ever.
Regardless of my terrible sense of direction, I had a great time at the Ava Lounge and was able to get home in only 2 trains! Lesson learned.

Tasting "Ava Lounge"
September 24, 2011
Ava Lounge is a roof top lounge in not too far from Times Square but a little closer to Colombus Circle. Party started at 10 pm with drinks ranging from $8 for beer to $12 for mixed drinks.
