He was used to the screams. Terror. Pain. Anguish. Spite and fury, cursing their names. Caged animals reduced to instinct. Too far gone to remember their humanity. People did not exist here. Only monsters.
It was not always this way. Or, rather, he was not always this way. When he first arrived, he was amongst the youngest to have ever graduated his class, the future as bright as his eyes as he imagined all the good he would do for the world.
He was not prepared for the horrors that awaited him.
The head scientist was amused at the young man's frequented attempts to argue the laws of morality in a place where morals held no value. Still, their would need to learn if he wanted to survive in a place like this. He would either bend or he would break, and that villain of a man was eager to find out which came first. Dr. Felicis Avary had become an experiment in his own right.
As if by some cruel joke Avary found himself partaking in some of the most horrific projects imaginable, all the while the imposing figure in the lead reassuring him all was 'for the greater good'. Truth was, this was a godless place, where sadists came to play, and atrocities went unpunished. Where the natural order was disregarded and the laws of nature broken for no real purpose other than the simple fact that they could.
In time the intellectual would override the emotional, and his true nature would become clear. He carried his assignments out with callused precision, and was a loyal suck up to the egos of superiors. A mediator where short tempers and arrogant minds clashed. A friend to the weak and the humble. A negotiator to the stubborn and the desperate. Curious and observant, there was a certain sadistic tendency beneath his friendly demeanor, as if it were some sort of a game to study others and lead them along to see how long it took for one to call his bluff. An actor. A chameleon. Someone to very carefully....
