Our weekend at Adelaide AVCon 2013
So who went to Adelaide AVCon recently?
We had a blast at our stand in The Indie Games Room!
Did you see us there? Here’s a pic of our stand…
We demonstrated our 3 releases for 2013 so far, with pre-release versions of Massteroid and Tap Turn Racing. These two certainly attracted a lot of attention so keep your ear to the ground and your eye on our Facebook page for news of those releases!
The weekend started off fairly calmly with our awesome posters and T-shirts arriving on Friday afternoon, looking amazing. We will have shirts for sale soon so stay tuned for those details! There are 6 great designs to choose from featuring the characters from Tap Turn Racing, which is our next game due for release.
Here’s a sample we prepared earlier of King Philip wearing one if our new shirt designs!
About 3pm on Friday we ventured to the Convention Centre to set up our stall and get all our electrical equipment tested and tagged. As the evening rolled in we got to see people arrive for the opening ceremony in their AMAZING costumes. It was then we realised this weekend was going to be epic.
As we arrived bright and early Saturday morning, eager convention goers were already lining up. Saturday proved to be everything we hoped for and more, with The Indie Games Room being the biggest it has been so far. We got to meet so many interesting people, which made the day even more fun. It was also great to get out of our own office and see what other local developers are doing. As always we re so blown away by the amount of gaming dev talent here in SA.
Our Director Philip Mayes got interviewed by Behind The News so we’ll be sure to post details of that soon. He was also interviewed by a few local reporters which was great to see.
During the afternoon we got to demonstrate two of our games on-stage as part of the Indie Games Showcase. This was one of the most exciting points of the day. We initially got 4 people up to play Massteroid in 2 heats, the winners playing off in a final. The game was displayed split screen up on the projector (after some initial technical issues) and the winner of the final heat won a T-shirt. For more info on Massteroid and how to play click here.
Next was the Tap Turn Racing Challenge. For more info on Tap Turn Racing and how to play click here. As Tap Turn Racing is a 4-player game we had two teams of 4 audience members. Every time a player crashed and wasn’t the winner, they had to choose an item from our prop box. The players wearing the least amount of props at the end, won a T-shirt.
Here’s what that looked like….
Players seemed to have so much fun donning crazy props that we had to stop the game when there were no items left. Except the bra. Which one poor guy eventually had to wear as there was nothing else left. We think he looked pretty good though. It matches his hula skirt pretty well.
Sunday rolled around and AVCon goers once again bounded through the doors bright eyed and bushy tailed. No literally, some of them had tails… and ears….. and swords and helmets and cloaks and… well you get the picture.
In fact check out the great galleries on the official Adelaide AVCon facebook page.
On the Sunday King Philip had the bright idea of bringing lollies to our table. So naturally a group of kids decided that our stall was their spot for the next hour. It was incredible watching how transfixed these kids were on the game, yet they still managed to regularly grab lollies. Or should I say devour?
The crazy thing was that the younger the player was, the faster they seemed to pick up the game. Our high score standard was set on Saturday when the first Planetary Obliteration of the weekend was made by a 6 year old girl. Feeling confident in our gaming skills are we?
One lovely employee from CDW Studios, who we share an office with, got a pretty good Massteroid score. Especially since he had to compete with one high-scoring, candy-devouring child prodigy in particular. “How many worlds have you destroyed today?” He asked, “I’ve done 10!”
Later in the afternoon a few of us were able to catch some of the Cosplay competition. Cosplay costumes are lovingly created by the people who wear them, many choosing to completely hand sew their costumes. These are one-off items that you can’t buy anywhere in the world.
This Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong duo were one of our faves! Who were yours?
We couldn’t go past this Oka Hachirou (Gantz) costume. It lit up AND the hands moved! Truly amazing!
At one point King Philip even managed to see the back of Jessica Nigri’s head as she judged the competition. And her hands. Woooow!
All of us at Mighty Kingdom HQ had an amazing time meeting fellow developers and AVCon-goers in The Indie Games Room and we are keen to do it again next year.
Thanks to everyone who came along and tried out our games!
If you haven’t liked our Facebook page be sure to do so as we’ll be posting the details of our next two releases Tap Turn Racing and Massteroid there first.
Until next blog , farewell and happy gaming!
