I am an American of Cale Romani descent. I stand in my Roma identity with pride, but I am also somebody who benefits from conditional white privilege. My representation is not perfect, but it is authentic. My existence as a white-passing person does not mean that white people have the right to impersonate Roma or appropriate from Romani cultures.

American superhero comics have a long history of including Romani characters, but not Romani creators. As these characters are so often products of gadje (non-Romani) imagination, they lack authenticity, and the history and identities they represent are often treated as disposable– particularly in film adaptations.

Wanda is a complex character with a highly problematic history, but I believe that the character could be transformed into a vehicle for meaningful representation if Romani creators were given a seat at the table. I got tired of not seeing that representation, so I decided to make my own.
