A/N: yes, still May prompts but I want to finish this cause I’m far too invested. TW: Remus uses the Killing Curse
<< previous part
The clearing around the safe house was surrounded by a small forest, just the last trees from the Forbidden Forest and shrubs which allowed Remus and Sirius to see what was happening in front of them while being mostly hidden from the scene. Probably, one very attentive eye could make out the two figures crouched among the vegetation, but they were pretty sure nobody of the hooded figures had the time to do that much, so it was a good enough hiding spot.
The main problem was that Marlene, in her deep green robes, was more difficult to notice and it didn’t take long for the two of them to lose her, not that their plan needed for them to have eyes on her. It was more than anything Remus’s will to have a wider idea of what was going on to know when it would have been the right moment to cast the Killing Curse.
Remus Lupin was many things, but murder wasn’t one of those. And it was weird, since he was a werewolf in the middle of a war and had been undercover for longer than he could remember. He never killed anyone, something his closest friends couldn’t claim. James and Sirius were Aurors, and Crouch gave them the green light to use Unforgivables on Death Eaters, a permission Sirius made his own mission to make the best of when it came to his relatives; and while the others didn’t have a direct authorization, there were times in which it was impossible not to. Still, not having been in the situation to use it before didn’t mean that Remus wasn’t trained and skilled in the Killing Curse, he just had to mean it, and considering the amount of green flashes flying over Marlene’s head, he more than meant it.
By his side, Sirius cursed in a whisper and Remus turned to look at him, for once ignoring how gorgeous he looked even in that situation. “What’s wrong?”
“Marls tapped the fucking thing, she needs help.” Remus didn’t exactly know how the ring worked, but he trusted him so he just nodded, motioning the hand in which wasn’t holding his wand for him to go. The Black heir kissed his cheek and smirked, and then he was gone.
The moment he was alone, Remus focused back on the fight in front of him and he noticed in a eye beat that one of the hooded figures was behaving weirdly, shooting spells against his pals in a subtle way to the point where many questions started to flare in his mind. Not knowing what that meant, he still decided to use it to his advance as he stalked closer to the limit of the greenery until one of the Death Eaters was Stunned and their strange ally was looking over at his vague direction. He raised the sleeve on his right arm and Remus noticed something, a small detail he wouldn’t have noticed hadn’t it been for his enhanced sight: a magical tattoo on the extremely pale skin of a huge dog playing with a tiny cat who was pretending to ignore his canine companion. Remus knew that tattoo, mostly because he had stared at a perfect copy of it many many times on Sirius’s naked back. Regulus.
The cat on the younger man’s forearm jumped up, nuzzling his face against the side of the crouching dog who jumped up, tail vibrating in happiness at being finally considered. Remus chuckled, despite himself, rapidly running closer until he reached the former Slytherin, thanking everything that nobody seemed to pay attention to them. He should have talked with the other, but that wasn’t the moment; pointing the tip of his wand to the Stunned figure, he yelled: “Avada Kedavra!”
The green flash of light illuminated in an eerie way the space between them and the chest of the Stunned Death Eater stopped to rise and fall. Regulus turned, took his arm and tugged them both and the corpse between the trees. He barely noticed, at that point, that they were close to Sirius and Marlene and she nodded, a Death Eater mask over her face, before taking it off and running among their enemies.
“Do your thing,” Regulus said to his brother. “You have about two minutes.”
Too much focus on the idea of fiction media as a causative agent of real life harmful behaviour, and not enough emphasis on the idea that what you get out of a work of fiction is heavily dependent on how you approach said work of fiction.
I can root for Aragorn to become king of Arnor and Gondor within the parametres of the narrative of LotR, without in any way supporting real life absolute monarchy, because I’m not a real life monarchist, a conclusion I reached at some point in my early teens while also consuming a healthy diet of fantasy fiction where the hero was the long-lost heir to some kingdom. Meanwhile, royalists who glorify the concept of returning to some imagined heroic past in real life are of course going to have their ideas reinforced by LotR, precisely because they seek out narratives that support their preconceived notions. In neither case is LotR the causative agent. Every story is a story, but every story is also a vessel for the reader to fill with their own idea of what the story is saying.
there are four human activities and they are crafting, stories, math, and fucking around. whatever you're doing is at least one of those four.
