a lot of what ifs

A/N: This is very short, and very bad... its prompt number 2 for @sdavid09s writing challenge. 

Sometimes, your character let’s their mind drift away to ‘what ifs’ and ‘if only’. Write your character living in one of those scenarios.

Warnings: Endgame spoilers!!!!

Peter Parker x reader

The weather had been nice and warm. The casket stood at the front in a beautiful shade of dark and polished mahogany. The ceremony had moved everyone to tears. Peter stood before the casket all by himself, traveling back in his mind to a time were everything had been different.

Now he was the last one standing in the damp grass. Everyone else had moved on to the reception hall in time for dinner. He didn’t feel like eating. He wasn’t hungry. Not at all. Instead of following aunt May to the car he had stayed behind to pay his respects alone. He had been like a father to Peter, even if neither of them had acted like it and he had never told him, a father was exactly what he was. Now quite literally too, with Morgan in the picture. Peter blamed himself for taking her father away from her. He had been there and didn’t do anything. At least not enough.

Feeling a hand touch his shoulder he turned his head to see who it was and what they wanted, feeling like being alone for just a moment longer. The hand belonged to aunt May. Shouldn’t she have been on her way to the reception hall right now? but no words were needed as she just put her arms around Peter, letting him know she was there for him. That she was always going to be there for him. It would certainly take some time to get used to that he would no longer be able to speak to, or see him. Maybe he would never get rid of the feelings of guilt, and maybe, just maybe, would he never be able to move on.

Standing together with aunt May for another few minutes Peter went back into his mind. He thought about the things that had been. All the happy times, and all the sad times. And briefly revisiting the memory of the last time he had attended a funeral. The memory only bringing new tears to his eyes.

He visited times that could have been. What if he had never gotten the bite from that spider? what if he never had accepted that “Stark internship”. And what if Thanos never had existed and they had never been forced onto that cursed battlefield? Maybe he would never get answers to even one of his questions, but it felt good to just let the thoughts roam free for a bit. Just escaping this brutal reality. Starting to turn around walking towards the car Peter gave his aunt a small smile. He knew he would be ok. It would take time. It would take effort. But it would get better all the same. But one thought kept coming back again and again.

Would it have been different if it had been him instead?
