Watching Over You
Natasha x Reader
Natasha was extremely worried. A shattered femur, three torn ligaments, a broken hand, a mild concussion, and that was just the start. She had zoned out after the nurse had said something about you having a herniated disk. Her rational thoughts were immediately drowned in waves of panic. She sat in the waiting room wringing her hands together. They hadn’t let her see you yet, they were still running tests. She tried to calm herself by thinking the day over.
You had both known going into the mission that it would be difficult. Steve had droned on and on about the extreme danger involved for the entirety of the team meeting. You hadn’t been too worried about yourself, you never were, but that didn’t stop you from fretting over Nat. She smiled at the memory of earlier that day when you would not leave her side while she was preparing the quinjet. It was your first mission together as a couple, and despite her obvious ability to handle herself, you were still concerned. You had told her you didn’t want to lose her just as your relationship was beginning. Eventually the star-spangled man with a very long plan, as you had called him jokingly, ended the meeting and everyone boarded the quinjet.
Natasha’s train of thought was interrupted by the doctor rushing out to inform her that you were still in a coma.
“Can I see Y/N?”
“I’m afraid not yet. We need to get them settled, and when they’re ready I’ll send a nurse out to get you. It may be a while.”
“Thanks,” she forced a smile. It was late, and Natasha was exhausted physically and emotionally, on top of still being unable to see you. All she could think about was what had caused you to be so broken, bruised, and bloodied.
The mission had started off well, you had infiltrated the Hydra base and secured the information you were after. It wasn’t until you were trying to escape that the both of you were surrounded. Natasha was dealing with five Hydra agents of her own, and you were being bombarded from all sides by at least seven agents, with more rushing forward. You were doing your best, but you were almost at your breaking point. Finally, a few of them attacked you from behind, catching you off guard. Natasha could hear your bone snap. You fell, only to be thrown into a wall by another Hydra agent. You tried to pick yourself up, but someone stomped on your hand, and you let out a yelp. That was when Natasha called for an emergency extraction.
The nurse returned, telling Natasha she could see you now. Nat has been able to successfully mask all of her emotions for many years, but when she heard you were in stable condition, it took all of her self control to not cry. When she finally laid eyes on you she couldn’t control it anymore, and tears streamed quietly down her face. She leaned over you and caressed your cheek, before sitting in the chair next to your bed and holding your hand. Next time she’d be sure to watch over you as you had done for her.
