“Hey there, kid.” Tony Stark greeted, taking his sunglasses off the bridge of his nose. Y/N rolled her eyes at the nickname, watching as his eyes scanned the front of her home, sunglasses spinning between his fingers. “Nice place you got here.”
“You say that like it hasn’t been over two years since we last saw each other. What can I do for you?” Y/N kept a firm grip on her front door, standing between the man who had been like a father to her and the threshold of the place she had made her home.
“I just thought I’d check up on you.” Tony raised his eyebrows, letting out an exasperated sigh. “Look, kid, are you gonna invite me in? It’s freezing out here. I know you’re basically an ice queen but you couldn’t have found somewhere warmer to hide out?”
Y/N moved to the side, allowing him to walk past her. “I like it here.” She followed his path into the kitchen, placing the mug she had been holding on the table. Tony rested his weight against the counter, in a manner not unlike Steve had so many months ago. Y/N crossed her arms across her body. “Now will you tell me what you’re doing here?”
Tony dropped the signature smirk from his face, his brows furrowing as he gave his head a quick shake. “Where is he, kid?”
“You’re gonna have to be more specific than that, T.” Y/N crossed the room to take a seat at her kitchen table, the same table she and who she was sure was the man in question had eaten their breakfast hours before. “I know a lot of he’s.”
Not bothering to hide his exasperation with her, Tony rolled his eyes. “You know who I’m talking about, Y/N. Don’t play stupid, it’s not a good look for you. Barnes, where is he?”
Setting her face in a neutral expression, she quirked an eyebrow in indifference - an expression Natasha had often coined. “You’re going to have to give me a little more than that.”
“Goddamn it, Y/N.” Tony cursed, walking over to her and placing his hands on the table in front of her. “Don’t act like you have no idea what I’m talking about. I know Steve was here. He had to have brought Barnes with him. So why don’t you stop lying to me and tell me where I can find him.”
Y/N took a breath, keeping her eye contact with Tony, ignoring the pressing question of how Tony knew that Steve had been to visit her. Slowly, she pushed herself away from the table. Moving so that there was barely a breath between her and billionaire, she replied coolly, “you seem to have your lines crossed somewhere, T. I was quite enjoying the life of solitude. Until today, it seems.” Y/N shook her head, walking into the living room. She took a seat on her sofa, pulling a blanket over her legs. “You know where the door is, Stark.”
Staring at her incredulously, Tony stood in the doorway. A silence hung in the air between the old friends, a silence Tony had to break. “So it’s Stark now? You’re just washing your hands of me? Just like that? You’re going to protect that monster?”
“He isn’t a monst-”
“He is!” Tony snapped, slamming his sunglasses down on the countertop. His face flushed, teeth clenched, Y/N could not help but think Tony had never looked at her like that before. He had never spoken to her with such malice. “Tell me, did Rogers tell you what he did? Did he tell you what he did to my parents? To my mother? He’s a monster, Y/N. He needs to face justice for what he did. He killed people, he spent years killing people and you’re just going to protect him!”
“Tony.” Y/N raised her palms, taking a small step forward. “That-”
“I swear to god, kid, if you try to tell me that it wasn’t him or he didn’t know what he was doing or some shit, I am going to lose it.”
Y/N lowered her hands, her fingers curling into fists. She squeezed her eyes shut, giving her head a slight shake before looking back at the man in her kitchen. “Tony.” He met her stare, his own dark eyes hopeful, hopeful that his friend would help him, hopeful that she had information on the man that had killed his parents. “Don’t come back here.”
