supernatural fanfic idea
So, we all know that Jensen Ackles can sing, and I don't think that supernatural used it fully to their advantage and I also think that there aren't enough fanfics about this so here is my idea
This can be set at any point prior to revealing Chuck to be God btw
In my head this is a filler type episode. The boys, Cas and depending what season it is; Bobby, Charlie, Kevin, Claire, Jody etc, honestly, I could see so many people in this role that I couldn't choose, are on a seemingly simple case. On this case, for whatever reason, rather than going undercover as FBI or other law enforcement, they have to go undercover on a singing show. When they arrive, they don't realise this, however, Sam quickly works it out and before Dean can say they are FBI or whatever, Sam interrupts and says that his brother is interested in auditioning. Dean tries to deny it, before Sam interjects, saying that his brother is just modest but he's a great singer and plays the guitar. Eventually the producer gives them the info for the audition and they leave. Both of the boys' expressions when talking to the producer and afterwards, would be hilarious
Dean: Sam I can't even sing
Sam: Yes, you can. You do karaoke all the time
Dean: Karaoke doesn't count!
Cas: Karaoke doesn't count?
Dean: Sam has signed me up for the competition!
Sam: *sigh* You'll be fine Dean
Now the important thing for this is that everyone in the competition is assigned the song that they are going to sing. Of course, Dean won't say what song he's been assigned cause he's feeling petty
When it's time for the competition Dean's visibly nervous and only Cas is able to calm whilst Sam and whoever else is there just exchange looks
Sam, Cas and whoever make their way to their seats to watch Dean and this convo or something similar takes place:
Other person: So, can Dean actually sing?
Sam: Yeah, he used to sing me to sleep all the time
Other person: There's a big difference between a lullaby and singing on stage
Cas: Dean used to sing on the street to earn money. He was rather successful (he knows this from when he gripped Dean tight and raised him from perdition)
Other person: If you're sure
When Dean goes on stage it's obvious he's trying to appear more confident than he actually is. Then he starts singing, gaining confidence with every note
He sings Me vs Me (Fightin' Man Blues) by Aventhis because a) I think Jensen's voice would work amazingly with this and b) it is exactly the sort of thing that Chuck would do
He ends up getting a standing ovation and wins the competition. When they finish whatever the case is, he gets an offer to become a singer professionally, produce and write his own songs, which as much as he wants to accept, Dean has to turn it down because someone has to stop the latest apocalypse
When they leave, despite them all hearing the offer and seeing how happy it made Dean, none of them bring it up because, no matter how much he tried to hide it, they also saw how much it hurt Dean to turn it down
It's not until much later, after they've worked out Chuck's true intentions, that they realise how he interfered in the song selection of the competition. This revelation isn't even a big one, nor does it occur at a big moment. It happens when Jack somehow finds a video of Dean's performance online, makes some off handed comments about how you could really hear the emotions in his voice, whilst he tries to convince Dean to perform for him. These comments cause Dean, Sam and Cas to exchange looks as they come to the same realisation. That even the small cases, the fun ones, that every aspect of their lives both good and bad, was orchestrated by Chuck. That nothing was ever truly theirs
Of course, Dean does end up playing for Jack. Cas and his son Jack deserves happiness, even whilst the revelation he unintentionally caused is making the weight on his shoulders heavier. Even when he's struggling to breath and all he wants to do is cry, vomit, scream and curl up into a ball. All he can think about, the only thing repeating in his head is that nothing was ever truly his. That not even one of his few healthy outlets to the insanity that is his life, was truly his
