New species added to the AVE (Avian Vector Encyclopedia) this month:
The Hooded Jewel-Babbler was captured on trail cams in Papua New Guinea from 2017 to 2024 and recognized as a new species. The holotype is a photo.
The Takara Leaf Warbler is a cryptic taxon once embedded within the Ijima's Leaf Warbler, but now separated as its own species based on vocal and genetic differences.
New AVE Species: A draft update from the IOC includes species splits like the Samoan Myzomela from the similar Cardinal Myzomela. Also species lumps, so taxa like Athi Short-toed Lark and Miombo Blue-eared Starling will no longer be listed by the IOC as full species, but I'll keep them all as legacy species in the AVE.
Dichromatic pairs - in each of these species the main pigment is melanin, but the male has mostly eumelanin (black/gray) and the female has mostly pheomelanin (reddish-brown/buff). This is a trend I noticed working on the AVE (Avian Vector Encyclopedia). I don't think it's fully understood why this is so, but it's touched on in this article from Avian Biology.

Also some other taxonomic shifts I added to the AVE recently: the Western Flycatcher, a lump of Pacific Slope and Cordilleran Flycatchers, and the Grand Cayman Bullfinch, elevated from Cuban Bullfinch subspecies to full species status.

An undescribed new Antpitta from Colombia goes by names like Antioquia Antpitta, Paisita (referencing the local people) and Santa Rosa Antpitta. I think Antioquia Antpitta has already been suggested as a name for the Urroa Antpitta. Anyone know about that?

Another new addition to the AVE, the Wakatobi Sunbird was split from the closely related and widespread Olive Backed Sunbird.
The Silvery-Breasted Tanager (Tangara velia cyanomelas) is the final addition to the ongoing AVE (Avian Vector Encyclopedia) project, pending new discoveries, splits, and corrections. Fittingly, it is not accorded full species status by some authorities, underscoring the taxonomic complexity I've encountered during the project.
