Gilbert was torn, torn between what he was feeling. He didn’t know what he was feeling, and it conflicted him. He thought Anne was a very smart girl with a certain fire inside her, he was intrigued by her the day she hit him in the face with her slate. He of course caused it himself as he called her ‘carrots’ but he just didn’t know what else to do to get her attention.
She had been avoiding him all day as he tried to catch her attention. He found himself genius for saving her in the woods earlier that day, he had stopped Billy from taunting her by just casually speaking to him. Gilbert thought he was freaking smooth especially with his ‘Do you need any dragons to be slain around here?’ – A real genius line to get her attention he thought.
Apparently, she didn’t think it was funny as she rushed off towards school, he had to run after her to keep up with her. He kept asking for her name, but she just ignored him, it only increased his curiosity as he ran after her like a lost pup. Gilbert also thought he was smooth when he let her win with the spelling bee and telling her that he needed to add an ‘E’, she of course only nodded as Gilbert thought would have done the trick.
On the other hand, there was this boy that was a true artist, Gilbert was amazed by his art skills as he had never seen such beautiful art. At first, he didn’t notice Cole as his heart was too occupied with Anne but soon something changed inside of him as he saw Cole. He had grown taller and cuter this year as he suddenly stood out, he even was taller than Billy.
There was something about him that sparked something inside of him, he never knew he had. Cole stirred up some unknown feelings as he felt his heart fluster at the sight of him. He had seen him look at himself with a certain spark in his eyes as it made Gilbert’s heart beat faster. Cole had little friends and Gilbert wanted to be a part of his life more than anything.
He had seen him many times sit between the coats alone as he felt an urge to sit next to him. Gilbert shuffled nervous towards him as he lifted his head from his sketchbook at the sight of him. – “Can I sit next to you?” – Gilbert asked him nervous as Cole looked surprised at him, he nodded shy and made some room next to him for Gilbert to sit down.
“May I see?” – Cole smiled shy at Gilbert as he was afraid to show him, his sketches. – “Only if you want me too?” – Cole nodded soft after a pause and handed over his sketchbook, Gilbert started to go through it as his eye fell on a certain page. Cole quickly took the book from his hands as he closed it shy, - “You weren’t supposed to see that…” – Gilbert felt his heart shiver now their hands touched as he had caught a glimpse of a sketch of him.
“I didn’t see anything…” – Gilbert replied as he tried to reassure him it was nothing, Cole smiled shy back at him as Gilbert licked his lips soft. He didn’t want to push it but the feeling he was having was keeping him up at night. He quickly released his gaze from Cole as he knew if he looked at him longer he would have kissed him.
Gilbert looked at his hands as they were pressed between his legs, Cole’s voice made him look at him again as he called out his name. Gilbert loved the sound of his name rolling over Cole’s lips as he gazed into his eyes. Cole noticed it and started to blush soft as he pressed his lips together. They were interrupted by the bell ringing as Gilbert got up and rushed to his desk before anyone could see his bright red face.
As everyone was walking in he caught Anne between the girls and he started to lean against his hand as he admired her fiery bright red hair. He felt his heart pull on the inside as he also noticed Cole sitting two seats in front of him. He nibbled his lip soft as he felt torn between the two of them, he knew his feelings for both was going to tear him apart, but he couldn’t choose.
Anne his number one never tried to tell him what to do and there could be no one as her. On the other hand, Cole his number two was the one that made him feel good as he made him swoon inside. Gilbert sighed deep as he knew he was so in love with two, he knew he was breaking up every rule, but he couldn’t help to be in love with two.
“I don’t know what to do?” – he said in his mind as he looked from Anne to Cole, - “Why can’t I choose the both of you?” – Gilbert growled loud apparently as Charlie next to him nudged him to be quiet. Gilbert looked at the front and saw Miss Stacy looking over at him, he apologized and kept his mouth and thoughts shut as he hoped no one had seen the battle inside of himself.
Gilbert tried not to look at both, but it was harder than he thought, why was this tearing him so up from the inside. During lunch time Gilbert had seated himself as far away from everyone as he needed to have a serious conversation with himself. – “Come one Gil, just chose one?” – he said to himself as he moved annoyed against the tree.
“What am I supposed to do?” – he called out as he ran his hands frustrated through his hair, - “Why do I have to be in love with two?” he growled loud as he saw the both of them talking to each other, he felt a bit jealous that he wasn’t there but he had to make up his mind first. – “Just pick someone?”
He sighed as he compared the two again. “Anne is the only one that could compete with me in a spelling bee and I love how she’s so grumpy against me… but Cole … oh, Cole is so sweet and gentle… I think he likes me, too right? Otherwise he wouldn’t draw me?” – Gilbert sighed again as he scratched the back of his head confused.
“Why is this so hard?” – he called out as he gazed at the two of them, - “I just choose the both of them and see what happens?” – he said to himself confused as he noticed Cole looking into his direction, he waved shy at him and when he saw the two of them come over, he wished he had never waved at him as he wasn’t ready to face them.
Cole walked over to him with Anne by his side as Gilbert tried everything to prevent his face from turning cherry red. Gilbert knew he had a problem with loving both, but he wanted to have both. – “Hey Gilbert!” – Anne called out as she seated herself in front of him, Cole greeted him as well as he took a seat next to Anne.
Cole smirked at the sight of Gilbert as he suddenly started to play with his sleeve nervous, - “Gilbert…” – Cole started as Gilbert felt his heart skip beats, he hummed shy at his remark as he avoided eye contact. Cole smirked again as he had him where he wanted him, - “I like you…” – he said calm as Gilbert lifted to meet up with him, - “Me too…” – Anne called out who had been quiet for some time.
Gilbert started to stutter as he didn’t know how to react to it, - “What about you?” – Anne asked him as Gilbert hated this confrontation. – “I …I … like the both of you…” – he said so soft it sounded as a faint whisper. They both had heard him, and each placed their hands on his as he started to blush, - “we know!” – they called out at the same time, Gilbert frowned as he couldn’t follow anymore. None of them looked angry or upset. – “I don’t understand? You’re not mad?” – they both shook their heads as Gilbert felt himself breath again.
“You don’t have to decide yet but know that we love you…” – Cole spoke as Anne nodded alongside of him, Gilbert nodded as he was glad some weight of his heart was lifted. He could now decide in silent as he could enjoy the company of both without hurting anyone’s feelings.
