💖 Shakespeare!

Much Ado About Nothing is probably my favourite Shakespeare work, so of course my favourite character is the absolute badass Beatrice. 

While I adore Catherine Tate in the filmed stage version, Emma Thompson in the flawless Kenneth Branagh film is just Perfect and Luminous completely embodying this sublime character.

Is there a wittier Shakespeare heroine? One that is allowed to claim with utter conviction O God, that I were a man, I would eat his heart in the marketplace!, and retain the sympathy and love of the audience, who fights for her cousin’s honour when she is scorned, who talks freely to the Prince (and refuses him!), who is almost always the victor in her verbal spats with Benedick. 

And the wordplay!

Benedick: My dear Lady Disdain, are you yet living?

Beatrice: Is it possible disdain should die while she hath such meet food to feed it as Signor Benedick?

Bendick: But it is certain I am loved of all ladies, only you excepted: and I would I could find in my heart that I had not a hard heart; for, truly, I love none.

Beatrice: A dear happiness to women!

💖 Jane Austen, please?

Oh yay, because I just love Austen so much, and of course the obvious go to is Elizabeth Bennet who I adore and is in many ways the Aspirational Austen Heroine, but I’m also exceedingly fond of Emma Woodhouse in all her glory, but my actual favourite, I think, would have to be Elinor Dashwood:

She’s such a good character (in every sense of the word), gentle but not fragile, has somewhat of a dry but not cutting wit, who always does the right thing even if it’s killing her inside (to the extent it’s a flaw), who internalises everything and makes do in a way that is almost tragic.

I love everything about Emma Thompson’s portrayal (I don’t care she was too old for the role) all the way down to the infamous BLEGH, although I also enjoy Hattie Morahan’s take, and have very fond memories of when I first read the novel on a wet train journey from Edinburgh to London.

💖 + Harry Potter, Robin Hood, and Star Wars

Harry Potter

The boss ass witch herself , Minerva “Have a Biscuit, Potter” McGonagall.

The headmistress Hogwarts deserves and needs.

Robin Hood

I’ve loved Robin Hood ever since he was the talking fox of my childhood, I could once recite Men in Tights practically by heart and love that Cary Elwes is at the same time hilarious while playing it utterly straight, and am very fond of the classic Erroyl Flynn laugh. While I also love Marian as a character, it’s always been Robin that I’ve held up as a true heroic ideal.

What I love most about Robin in the bbc series is the complexity of the character - a returning soldier riddled with PTSD and guilt about the war in the Holy Land, with a no-kill policy that he inevitably must break, good, kind and compassionate and willing to give up a life of privilege to help others. And yet he’s so deeply flawed - vain and desperate for validation, he doesn’t always treat the people who love him most right. It’s hard to Do The Right Thing, heroism is a struggle, and I love the characters who try despite it all.

Star Wars

Not only my favourite SW character, but my favourite character of all time ever: Luke Skywalker.

Another heroic ideal, another character who is utterly good and yet struggles with the darkness inside. I can never really understand when people think Luke is boring or lacks complexity - his arc in the OT is so wonderful and nuanced, from the farmboy searching for adventure, to cocky reckless rebel leader, to determined Jedi risking it all to save his father. He is the last of the old Jedi, and the first of the new, in the end wiser than Yoda and Obi-Wan because they could not see past the flaws of the Order that would not allow attachment, and he could.

A character who is the embodiment of hope, who despite all the trauma and pain, never, ever gives up. That’s who Luke Skywalker is, and Disney can’t take that away from me.

💖 + JRR Tolkien

I have to admit to having never read the LotR books, although I have read The Hobbit - the former have been in my To Read pile for literally years.

So mainly going by the films (and the musical!), probably Galadriel:

I love an Elf/Faerie Queen, and of course who better than the ethereal, superlative Cate Blanchett; bare feet, flowing gown, melodious voice, exuding gravitas. I love her as the narrator of the prologue (despite Ian McKellan’s grumbling that it should have been him!), and am very fond of her songs in the musical (Though shadow fall across this land/before the wind and fire I stand).

Top 5 Mara Jade moments.

Ohh, good one!

Walk in the Woods on Wayland.  Basically all of The Last Command, but particularly these scenes, Mara convinced to join them on the mission, infected by Luke’s idealism and her growing appreciation of him (she spends a lot of time “studying Luke’s profile” guys), the realisation that her whole life was a lie, and actually not only accepting that, but overcoming it.  Basically, congratulations on your fabulous character development.

Future sister-in-laws.  Mara and Leia working together during the Corellian trilogy (starting with Mara getting transferred to Leia’s cell because she was starting fights with other prisoners).  Their mutual distrust is a little OOC, but I love these two awesomeladies being capabaleladies together.  

Mama Bear Extraordinaire.  While I of course have issues with Sacrifice (well...with all of LOTF), they don’t include the no-holds-barred, fight to the death with Jacen, particularly when he realises that she Just Won’t Stop until she wins.  The only way Mara would ever go out was fighting tooth and nail.  Honorable mention for earlier in the book when she strolls into a Jedi meeting battered and bruised after a fight with Lumiya and then cracks wise about it. 

The Thaw.  Mara doesn’t hesitate to leap into action to thwart a kidnapping attempt on Leia’s baby twins, heedless of the fact that she is in no way on the New Republic’s side and she still totally wants to kill Luke you guys, no second thoughts whatsoever.  

“I’ll come with you.”
