“Woah, hold on a second. What’s gettin' pretty boy all smiley? Judging by the coffee stain on your shirt you should’ve had the worst morning in history” your co-worker Derek Morgan concluded mere seconds after arriving in the bullpen. He swings back his chair with ease and plunges onto it a cheeky smirk resting on his face. Damn it, he’s only ever paying attention when he’s not supposed to.
"Nothing", you countered probably slightly more high-pitched than necessary, "I-, um, I just remembered a really good article on astrophysics I've read on the subway on my way to work, wanna hear 'bout it?" Your curious colleague threw his arms up in defense: "Nevermind, I'm good!"
Just like you expected.
Right away, your thoughts wandered back to the woman you didn't even ask for her name. Her shiny wavy hair falling around her soft features just beautifully, the adorable look in her eyes when she realized what had happened. Who was she?
You've definitely never seen her around and judging by her restless appearance and the box she was carrying she has to be a newbie.
"If you ever see me around", she said.. but was she really starting to work here? She definitely can't be an addition to the team since you would have heard Hotch mention it at least once alongside Garcia being super anxious about it, protective of her family as she was.
Usually, you're not so keen on changes like that either but this time it made your heart ache that there wasn't a future scenario in which the mysterious girl would be your colleague working cases alongside you.
The unlikely probability of you having even the slightest chance of winning her over, making her laugh, maybe even getting someone like her to... like you? How ridiculous.
Being a man of science you didn't really put much thought into the concept of love at first sight either, it rather confused you, really. But the way your stomach flipped when her eyes met yours for the first time was something you couldn't quite make sense of.
Shortly after, JJ ripped you out of your daydreaming as she called everybody into the briefing room announcing that there's something important to talk about. This baffled you at first, considering today was supposed to be a paperwork day and she seemed way too relaxed for an urgent case to have come up.
Being the last one to enter the briefing room you could barely trust your eyes as your gaze landed on the cause of your meeting, standing right next to Hotch.
"Guys gather around, I want you to meet someone. I'm sorry I've been keeping it a secret but lately, I've been interviewing quite a few applicants considering our latest cases revealed that we're desperately in need of a helping hand. This is Agent y/l/n she will be joining the BAU as our newest team member. Please give her a warm welcome."
The bright smile on the very familiar woman's face froze immediately once she took notice of you, changing into an amused look of disbelief. Her cheeks flushed and she bit her lip nervously. If you didn't know it's impossible you would think your heart just skipped a beat. You couldn't help but grin even though you were just as shocked as she was.
You can't express how much pride you felt in this moment. Not only did it turn out to be exactly how you wished for so desperately but you also were the only one to already have a connection with her. Not the most ideal way of breaking the ice, obviously, but still.
Outside of the world you and y/l/n just created around you a surprised and excited murmur was going through the room, topped by Garcia's pouting since she hadn't had a clue this whole time. However, she was also the first one to approach the new agent. "OMG, you look hella cute, I can just tell you and I will have inside jokes going on in no time. Hi I'm Penelope!"
Her quirkiness was answered by a giggle which must have been the most pleasant and melodic sound you've ever heard.
"So nice to meet you all. I'm y/n and I can't tell you how excited I am to work with each of you!" the young woman chimed.
Y/n. What an utterly beautiful name, fitting so perfectly to a character like her. Hearing it now, you can't imagine ever not having known her name.
Derek was of course instantly turning on his charm: "Wow, Agent y/l/n. Excuse me for being so straightforward but to what do we owe the pleasure of welcoming such a lovely lady in our midst?" he flirted as he acted like kissing her hand, emphasized by a cheeky wink.
You could see her cheeks flushing adorably in a mix of flatter and speechlessness. As much as you liked seeing her this way it also stung a little that you weren't the one getting her to react this way. But you got it. The ladies love Morgan.
After most of the others had introduced themselves, her attention fell back on you. "And this is..." started Morgan patting your shoulder before noticing your amused and slightly embarrassed looks at each other. "Wait what.. have you guys already met?"
"Well, sort of.." you tried to explain, gaining curious looks from your colleagues.
Y/n cringed visibly. "Yeah, um.. I might have ruined my new coworker's shirt first thing this morning when I arrived here." The other's look fell on the coffee stain that showed a little from underneath your jacket. They all burst out in vibrant laughter.
"Well, it really wasn't that bad.. Now that we meet properly, I'm Spencer Reid" you tried to introduce yourself as composed as possible. "A pleasure to meet you Agent Reid" The impact of her saying your name was again something you weren't prepared for. At all.
The laughter in the room suddenly froze when the others saw what happened right before their eyes. And you knew why.
You, Dr. germaphobic Reid, were willingly shaking hands with a total stranger. This caused y/n to freeze as well, panic governing her eyes.
"Wait, have I messed up again?" Her soft hand pulling back from yours quickly. "N-No! Not at all" you blurted out. "It's just that...Um"
"Our resident genius here just isn't a huge fan of handshakes, that's all" Morgan came to your rescue. "Oh god, I'm so sorry. I can't believe I'm embarrassing myself again." The heat grew to your cheeks just thinking of her feeling humiliated just because of your weirdo tendencies.
She must surely hate you by now. Great.
"Don't worry, I really didn't mind, how could you have known?" you tried to save the situation smiling at her reassuringly. If only she know how much you didn't mind.
"Trust me, girl, besides that, our doctor here definitely won't hold any of today against you. He's a clumsy mess himself, you'll see." The others big time supported Garcia's statement. "So.." Hotch cleared his throat "since you already broke the ice so smoothly. Reid, the desk opposite to you should be currently empty anyway. Why don't you show Agent y/l/n her new workspace?"
As the briefing room slowly emptied and the two of you were left alone an uncomfortable silence filled the room and you could tell there was something on y/n's mind.
"So.. the genius with the three doctorate degrees on your team.. from what I just heard I figure that's also you then?" You could see her pained and guilty frown as she looked up at you from under her thick lashes.
"Um, yeah.. that, that would be me" you admitted shyly.
Funny how you desperately tried to keep the facts people reduce you to from her so that she wouldn't put the weirdo label on you like everyone else you meet and yet somehow it all came out already after like five minutes.
"Wow, respect. You really are hella impressive then." Her reaction was sincere. There was no dismissive comment, no eye-rolling. "I just hope you can forgive me another misstep when addressing you earlier without your title" now she was clearly being sarcastic as she raised her eyebrows exaggeratedly.
"But I'm sure you're getting asked about your academic successes all the time anyway. So. What makes Spencer Reid tick otherwise? When he's not being a genius with three Ph.D.'s?"
You were pretty much caught off guard by this. No one ever reacted to you that way before. It was new. And nice. She was incredibly nice.
"Well.. I'm actually interested in a lot of things" you started what inevitably had to end in a massive rant, of that you were sure. But she didn't seem to mind. In fact, she rather seemed genuinely interested, her vibrant eyes searching for eye contact accompanied by the cutest chuckles every now and then as you showed her around the bullpen.
"And um, by the way.. I couldn't help but notice your volume of Poe earlier. You know, I-I really didn't wanna intrude but when I was picking up your stuff-"
"Oh yeah, that" she laughed breathily looking to the ground. "I was a little self-conscious for a split second. I honestly thought you laughed at me because of it."
"What?! Are you kidding me? I-I mean I'm sorry, it's just.. I actually really love Poe's work. I admire his short stories, his writing style is unparalleled if you ask me."
"I absolutely agree" The way her face lit up and her eyes widened as she looked up at you sent shivers down your spine. Your eye contact lasting for just a moment longer before y/n cleared her throat and went to settle in at the workspace facing your own arranging her belongings.
"Well then, now that I know of your excellent taste I hope you're ready for me to annoy you with random literature discussions at any given time, Doctor Reid" she specifically emphasized the last part, locking eyes with you an irresistible smirk decorating her features.
God, she is beyond gorgeous.
Trust me, you couldn't even annoy me in a million years, you thought to yourself.
"I can't wait, y/n."
