#16: things you said with no space between us
“This wasn’t what I expected from a weekend away,” Pike said, her breath ghosting across Keyleth’s collarbones, her head heavy on Keyleth’s chest. “But I can’t bring myself to complain about it.”
Keyleth squirmed, making the hammock sway a bit, rocking them side to side. “I really am sorry about the reservations. I just-”
Pike reached up a hand to cover Keyleth’s mouth, the next few words coming out muffled before she stopped talking.
“Kiki, it’s okay. I promise,” Pike said, tilting her head to rest her chin on the top of Keyleth’s sternum. “I had a really good time with you today, and I’m glad we could get a couple days away from everyone before the craziness sets in.”
Keyleth hummed in resigned assent, and Pike chuckled, removing her hand.
“I can’t deny that I was expecting to stay in a cute little cottage,” Pike said, propping herself up on Keyleth’s chest just in time to see her expression fall, “But hearing the waves and smelling the salt air out here? It’s so much better than I could have imagined.”
Keyleth’s lips quirked upward, a hopeful light filling her eyes. “Really?”
“Really,” Pike said, dropping a kiss onto the corner of her girlfriend’s lips.
“I wanted everything to be perfect,” Keyleth admitted, twisting one of her long arms around to hold Pike’s hand. “You’re going away to med school in two weeks… I’m just not sure-”
“Kiki,” Pike interrupted, turning her hand to kiss the back of Keyleth’s. “You made the last three years of my life at Emon University the best I’ve ever had. We have something special, and that’s not going to change even when I’m a few hours away.”
She was glad to see Keyleth’s lips turn upward in a smile. “You’ll Skype when you have time?”
“Every day if you want me to,” Pike said, a promise in her heart. She really would do anything Keyleth asked for, if she could manage it.
“Well, maybe two or three times a week,” Keyleth amended, her cheeks flushing slightly. “Every day seems a little much.”
“I called Papa Wilhand every night my freshman year,” Pike pointed out. “And that was for myself, not for him.”
“But that was four years ago,” Keyleth pointed out, cheeks still pink. “You’re past that now.”
Pike scoffed at that. “Am I?” she asked, squeezing Keyleth’s hand and laying down on her chest again, the warmth and slight sway of the hammock lulling beneath the stars that peeked through the opening above them. “I don’t know, I might get homesick and need to see my beautiful girl so she can talk some sense into me.”
Keyleth squeezed her hand in return, and Pike grinned, snuggling into Keyleth’s warmth, grateful for the way they managed to fit together after so many nights spent in each other’s company.
They were silent for long enough that the rhythmic, overlapping nature of Keyleth’s heartbeat beneath her cheek and the crashing of waves nearby had started to make Pike’s eyelids heavy. It was then that Keyleth spoke, soft enough that Pike almost didn’t hear her.
“I wouldn’t mind that.”
Pike smiled again, and Keyleth’s heartbeat sped up. She’d obviously thought Pike had drifted off.
“I love you,” Pike hummed, just loud enough to be heard.
There was stillness for a long moment, but then the hammock shifted gently as Keyleth disentangled her arms from beneath the two of them to wrap around and settle on Pike’s back.
“I love you too, Pike.”
