Australia is strongly opposed to capital punishment and the government always tries to work to get clemency for any Aussie nationals facing the death penalty in foreign countries but sometimes that shit doesn't always work out, whether due to fuck-ups in the legal process or because the country that the national is being tried in is just too strict and stubborn with their sentencing and belief in the death penalty.  

here's an article about Australia's position on capital punishment and what we're doing (or what we're not doing enough of) to encourage it's abolition in foreign countries.
