“Kai…”
The sound of coughing drifts into the kitchen as Kaidan stirs the pot of soup; his mother’s homemade recipe. Minestrone, one of his favourites while growing up.
“Yeah?”
“I’m fucking dying…”
Kaidan bites down on his lower lip to keep himself from laughing as he continues to mix the soup. He knows Axel is writhing on the couch, making things look much worse than they actually are.
Kaidan witnessed the man eat bullets as he charged into no man’s land, dislocate his shoulder and still fight like nobody’s business, get ribs broken from being rammed by a krogan, and not once did he ever complain. In fact, the one time Axel sat on the gurney in the med-bay back on the SR-1, laughing about his broken ribs, had Kaidan a little concerned the man wasn’t right in the head, albeit being his roommate on Acturus station for years and being friends with him.
He watched on as Axel made jokes, trying to distract Ashley from her injuries as Dr. Chawkas patched her up, and Kaidan understood then why everyone thought so highly of him; he always put the needs of others before his. Kaidan admires that, loves that about him. Just remembering it makes Kaidan’s cheeks warm.
Yet somehow, a cold has him begging for his life and Kaidan can’t help but find this hilarious.
“Kaidan, did you hear me? I’m dying!” Discontent groans and moans are overly exaggerated by the man lying on the couch.
Kaidan stifles his laughter by biting on his knuckles. “You’re fine.” He calls out to the living room.
“Kaidan, that's heartless. I’m going to be dead tomorrow and you’re going to feel bad.” Axel’s voice is barely hoarse.
