‘erised’, he reads aloud, one letter after another, hard to distinguish in the dim twilight of the dusty classroom. eri... erased... rise... ‘desire’, she says softly. ‘that’s my girl’. he looks at her, paler than the half-wiped rests of writing on the blackboard, eyes lowered, arms crossed over her chest. then in the mirror. then, at her again. ‘come here. your turn to come to me’.  she makes half a step. ‘closer’. the two stand in a tight embrace in front of the mirror with the heavy wooden frame. ‘but...i don’t understand’ methodically, she counts the empty boxes piled up on a desk behind them. four... five... six. looks into the glass. six. ever so gently, he pulls her even closer. ‘i do, my love. look’ the reflection winks, and their lips come together. a thousand years later, the cold, indifferent surface shows two panting, red-faced students. as they leave, they notice the inscription has disappeared.

‘Wait’, he said in a lifeless tone. ‘I have to do something.’ He kneeled down, slowly and cautiously, to take the thing off her chest. Still warm. Breathe, he whispered, breathe. She didn’t. Then, he undid the clasp and threw it away as hard as he could, without looking.  There. Like this. Now you’re free, now you’re mine. He lay down next to her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.  Baby. What have you done. What have we done. Baby. I’m not going anywhere. ‘What the holy fuck?’ ‘Shoot me. Shoot me too, so we’ll be together. Cowards. Animals’. ‘What’s going on...’ Someone was trying to help him up. I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying with you. He looked like a dog guarding something. Could have growled. ‘She was my wife’. The words wouldn’t come out. Explaining this was even harder than... ‘Before!’, he barked, seeing his widening eyes. Always. He buried his face in her hair. It smelled like blood.
