The pitter-patter of rain filled the void of the otherwise silent night, which had only a small interruption (a life or death scenario, but that wasn’t -- too bad. Not for him. For her, though, maybe.) in the last few hours.
He’d been surprised -- she’d only retaliated in self-defense, likely on the way to her home or some equivalent when she was jumped -- but vines growing at the feet of men to knock them down... That was anything but human.
And it all happened in slow motion, as he’d intended to protect her. And then, he slowed and time normalized, standing in front of the girl who’d just taken down an attacker.
“Need a hand?” A smile, one offered, the other shoved in his pocket. Maybe she was a mutant, but whatever the case, it was the kind of power that struck fear in the hearts of humans.
