The Antipodes of the Mind: charting the phenomenology of the Ayahuasca experience

Often, the Ayahuasca experience places drinkers in situations in which they feel that their individual identity is in jeopardy.  They may try to dismiss the experience as unreal, as mere hallucination.  The problem with this strategy is twofold.  First, there is no guarantee that the drinker would be able to convince himself of the unreality of the experience.  In this case, the experience is likely to be more, not less, frightening.  Alternately, the drinker may succeed in self-suggestion but then the experience will be lost.  As several fellow travelers on this path have told me, the only viable option is to let go- suspend judgement and enter.  Then one is more likely to have a meaningful experience. Pablo César Amaringo Shuña (n. Ucayali, 1938 - f. 16 de noviembre de 2009) fue un pintor peruano de origen indígena reconocidos internacionalmente por sus coloridas obras artísticas. Cuentan que fue un viejo chamán habitante de la ribera del gran río experto en la planta de la ayahuasca, una planta alucinogena considerada maestra para la cultura oriunda.
