Crap, I might actually have to give up ReiAri (speaking of blast-from-the-past ships) for AyaRei.

This needs a more clever name, though. Fantasy Reporter? Shame ‘n’ of Paradise? Incident-al Contact? Black and White and Red All Over? Help me out here.

you know, you got me thinking about it and I think Reimu x Aya is a really solid ship. reason I say that is Aya has been around a long-ass time and is savvy enough to understand how gensokyo really works, so she'll have Reimu's back when she has to do the shitty parts of her job, like killing people who've become youkai. the rest of Reimu's ships could easily end up at odds with her over things like that, and the real value of a ship is tested when the chips are down.

Yeah, in thinking about it in a serious context, someone like Aya is perfect for someone like Reimu: 

No allegiances to anyone that’s inclined to start anything serious (I imagine the tengu in general and Lord Tenma in particular will never intentionally start an incident)

Won’t judge Reimu for her actions

Knows to stay out of the way and, in fact, has a vested interest in Reimu doing her job

I can see her taking a fascination in Reimu doing her job and becoming more interested in her as a person as a result, and Reimu in turn growing to tolerate (and maybe more???) someone whose behaviors and motives she can depend on, including not having to worry about Aya ever interfering.
