Ayia Napa, Cyprus
May 1st
Good evening everyone…. I’ve been trying to upload my blogs for a while now but tumblr keeps taking them down. I think it's actually going to work this time (crossing my fingers) Since my uploads have not gone through, this post is going to be a bit longer than usual. If you want to skip to the end to see the pics that's cool.
For the first four days of spring break I really just relaxed and got caught up on some shows that I haven’t been able to watch in a while. I wanted to relax before Thursday came. On the 21st one of my friends from back home came and visited me. We spent most of her first couple days here just walking around Nicosia. Mainly because when she got here she did not have any of her luggage. The airlines that she flew with lost her suitcase, and she did not receive it until her second day here. After she got her suitcase we were able to go out more and explore. Sadly, her carryon was never returned to her so we had to buy some things from the kiosk. I took my friend to old town near the check point to cross to the northern side of Cyprus. We walked around to the small shops and grabbed coffee. We went to old town on friday and it was good friday so there were quite a few shops that were closed. We didn't mind since I wanted her to take a day to do something less stressful and less active to get used to the time difference. The next day we went a little south and did some shopping at the mall of Cyprus. Not only did we both want to go shopping but since she did not have her carry on we had to get some swimsuits and new outfits. While at the mall we both realized that malls and outlets in the states are dying off. In our state back home we would have to drive an hour, sometimes even two hours to find a mall or a shopping center, versus I remember when I was in middle school after I got home my friends and I would go to the mall and hang out. Since I have been here in Cyprus there are plenty of malls everywhere and there are still many people who go to them for shopping or going to the movies.
After going to the mall we both wanted to see the new fantastic beasts movie that had come out the week before. We were both very scared because we did not know if the movie would be shown with english dub and greek sub or if they would show the movie with greek dub and greek sub. Luckily when we got to the movie theater we found out that most if not all Hollywood movies are in english with greek subtitles. We were able to see Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Without giving away any spoilers I will say that the movie was a little slow in the beginning, but it did pick up in the middle with action. The next day we went to see Morbius. It's kind of like Dracula but in modern day times, fun fact if you did not know Morbius is a marvel movie. I did not know this and was very surprised when I saw an end credit that had another marvel character from a recently released movie. I personally liked Morbius better than the Fantastic Beasts movie. The one main thing I liked about Morbius is that it was not predictable and it kept my attention from beginning to end. My friend and I were both very happy that the movie theater was not packed. This was mainly because we went to see the movies on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Sadly we were not able to get a student discount, but the popcorn and snacks are a lot cheaper at the movie theaters here versus in the U.S.
After enjoying Nicosia, on Tuesday morning we got a bus to Ayia Napa. I wanted to take my friend to at least one beach while she was here. We found an AirBnb for only $80, which was very cheap for the area. I have heard from Cypriots that Ayia Napa for them is like Miami to Americans. The two days that we were there, construction was still going on and people were still getting ready for the season but we were still able to enjoy ourselves. The beach in Ayia Napa was beautiful. Just like in Paphos the water was crystal clear and the sand was clean. Since the season has not officially started yet, there weren’t many people at the beach, it was mainly families and other locals enjoying the break rather than many tourists. It was very relaxing and I’m glad there were not many people there. I hate fighting for the good spot in the sand. After the beach we went out to eat and enjoyed some drinks at a bar. I am happy that I was able to see Ayia Napa before the chaos and people, because global semesters are taking us this weekend before study week. This weekend that we are going there is going to be a lot of people there. I was able to experience Ayia Napa at a slower pace before the party life hits.
Tomorrow starts the last week of classes :))))), I am sooooo happy and sad. I am happy because who wouldn’t be excited about classes ending but at the same time it means that slowly but surely my time in Cyprus is coming to an end. Today is May 1st so I do have one complete month left before I am leaving and going back to the U.S. After this week we have a full week to study and prepare. I'm actually going to use this week to study and prepare, I really do like my classes here and I want to succeed this semester. After study week the last two weeks of May are dedicated to finals. Luckily my finals are spread out, so I only have two the first week, two the second week and then my last final is May 31st.
I am soo sorry this is such a long post, but I wanted to share everything in one post since tumblr was fighting me the past two weeks. Have a great day/week:)
