Why don't you share with us some of the story that led to Mario from Super Mario becoming Vim from Vim

Basically, long story short-

Well, yeah. Legally undead.

But him changing from human to a hybrid of a Dark Elf and a Pyrow was a gradual process that happened several years after revival, due to managing to get himself a loving husband and family ala MGE rules.

The reason he even woke up from the dead and could "evolve" into a monster species at all is due to demonic energy, which basically woke up his soul after the Mushroom Kingdom's collapse. You can blame Dimentio/Dimmy for THAT one.
