Simple beauty: the first dahlia to bloom in the field was named Red with Black Stripe by William Woys Weaver, the man who cracked open my love for seed saving, and also my love for dahlias. As beautiful as this flower is, she was slated for “deaccession”, a cruelly scientific word for us breaking up. However, this winter she excelled in our tuber taste tests, so this bloom is now overlooking a long bed of the best tasting dahlias from which we will be saving seeds in hopes of selecting even tastier ones from future seedlings. We also plan to make these true seeds available through Truelove Seeds so that you too can select for flavorful and abundant tubers. It’s early in my dahlia breeding journey. It’s been fairly passive. I planted 90 dahlias in my hoop house from seeds of the most elaborate, colorful, and large blooms in the garden last year, and so far I’m only getting singles from red to maroon (except for this one red double at the top left). I was just reading somewhere that if you have any singles (open-centered and easy to pollinate) within 50 feet or so of your doubles, you’ll likely get singles from seed. For the majority of these plants, I’ll taste-test the tubers because their blooms are not unique enough to warrant keeping them for cut-flowers in future years (I’ve already got countless red and maroon singles in my collection). Up-potting dahlia seedlings and admiring their babiest of tubers beginning to take shape. The fun thing about dahlias, like apples, is you never know what the plant will produce when grown from seed - 100 plants from the same parent will likely all have different foliage and flowers. Dahlias are an Aztec food crop - the tubers are for eating, but hundreds of years of breeding for pretty flowers has caused a drift in genetics away from tasty large tubers (with some exceptions). #acocotli #watercane #dahlia #dahliaseedlings #babytuber #octoploid #transposons #aztecfood
