Iris is busy with navigation, and Trey is fixing something downstairs. That leaves me with Valerie and Peter.

We're in the dining area, chairs dragged over to the window. Valerie's head lays against the glass, her eyes trained on the void while they dance. Her hands move as if without input as she has some fruit. A sheet of paper sits on the dining table before Peter, a pen scribbling over its surface. He's mumbling to himself about monitors and blood pressure, or something.

"Watcha makin'?" I ask.

He looks up with his head but not his eyes. "Back in the lab we had a lot of supplies that I don't have here." His attention turns to the girl at the window. "Are you feeling alright, Miss Valerie?"

She gives a nod as she pops another grape in her mouth. "Just hungry."

How brows knit together, and he jots down a few more items. "Trey said we're going to resupply soon?" he asks, looking up at me.

I nod. "We're low on food, and the water purifier is due for maintenance." I lean back in my chair and stare out into the vast void just outside. "Trey likes to stop in at this one shop on Medillion."

Valerie pipes up. "Where's that?"

"It's out in the farther reaches of Vitian-controlled space," Peter sighs. "A veritable den of thieves and scalawags…"

"Also has lots of hard-to-obtain things for pretty cheap," I point out. "Y'know, like medical equipment."

Skyrim AND Fallout AND my book book

SKYRIM:

The trip back to Dragon Bridge was much faster than the one to Solitude had been. Once back in the Four Shields, Iriae scrambled to pack up her belongings. Once everything was put away, she picked up a dagger and stepped out behind the inn to start hacking her wavy hair off. The red clumps piled up in the snow at her feet, and she kicked them away once she was finished.

She knew it was bad from the strangled little gasp Caryalind let out at the sight. Cirinel handed her the war paint she'd asked her to pick up, and both Mer watched with varying levels of disgust as she put it around her eyes and down her cheeks.

"Do I look different?" she asked.

"Very," Cirinel replied. "You could throw soot in your hair to make it darker."

Caryalind squawked like a choked bird and frantically shook his head. "Do not do that, I beg of you. It'll get everywhere. We'll leave a trail."

Iri nodded in agreement. "You're right. I'll just leave it short and call that good."

FALLOUT (warning for cringe 12 yr olds):

Felicity picked up her pip-boy, giggled maniacally when she saw the chapter had posted, then unplugged it and started heading up the stairs. Most of the building was in ruin, preventing her from making an easy path to the other half of the museum. She hurried up the stairs with her dog on her heels, and took a left at the first open exhibit she found. 

The actual exhibit itself had her stopping dead in her tracks. The familiar gear shape of a vault door met her eyes. Dogmeat continued past her, tail wagging as he went up the stairs past the door. Felicity took a tentative step into the door room. It felt eerily familiar, but she shoved the thought down. 

“All vaults have to have a door,” she mumbled to herself, trying to ignore that the control panel was exactly where it had been when she struggled to put the code in, resisting the urge to look back at Amata.

As she walked further into the vault, the more her hair stood on end. It was like looking at a doppelganger. The walls were the same— aside from the occasional splatter of blood, which she tried not to think about. The lights, although dimmed and flickering, cast the same soft warmth that she'd always felt on her back at home. In the vault. 

The day/night cycle entirely relied on those lights. Curfew was when it got dark. When she was twelve or so, Felicity had snuck out to her secret place— down in the reactor, the one her father had set up— with Amata. They'd crawled behind some boxes, and eaten a ridiculous volume of hoarded and stolen snacks. Laying on their stomachs under a blanket, they'd spent all night furiously writing Silver Shroud roleplay on a shared thread. 

“Ooh, ooh,” Felicity had said, tapping her fingers on the ground. “What if the Purple Petticoat and the Dandelion Dress used their cool powers to figure out where the guy was?!”

“And then the Dandelion Dress burnt him to a quackin’ crisp,” furthered Amata. 

A little bit of mischief twinkled in her eyes. “Maybe even a freakin’ crisp,” Felicity whispered. 

Amata gasped, scandalized. “LISSY!”

Felicity giggled to herself and typed it in carefully. “There… immortalized…”

BOOK BOOK:

As the two of them leave, Peter and I are left in the room alone. He shuffles his feet and wrings his hands. I worry my bottom lip, and then hold a hand out to him.

"We've not been really introduced," I say, when he stares blanky at it. "I'm Hyacinth."

He takes my hand. "Peter."

His grip is firm, and it's almost like I can feel the nervous energy buzzing under his skin. I don't know how long a handshake is supposed to be, I've never given many, so I just keep shaking his hand. I don't think he's given many either, cause he just shakes it right on back.

"So, err…" he says, grip still firmly in my own, "does your brother have a girlfriend?"

I nod. "Her name's Nissa, why?"

He flushes pink, and his grip grows a little tighter. "I think I uh— ran into her earlier? When I was trying to get to the bathroom? I sort of… uh… pushed her out of the way so I could get in." He refuses to meet my eyes.

"Did you explain you were gonna throw up?" I ask.

He goes redder and shakes his head. "N-no."

"You can tell her when you see her next," I say, taking my free hand and using it to pat him on the back. "She'll forgive you. She's a real nice lady, I promise you."

Nissa is nice. Every time I've seen her, she's been all sweet and kind to everyone she's with. She helped me fix my hair once, a few months ago, when Trey came to visit.

He nods. "Promise?"

"Yeah. She's forgiving. I once nearly blew her car up and she didn't get mad at me."

His eyebrows shoot up to his hairline. "How did you manage that?!"

I wave it off. "Story for another time. D'you want to let go of my hand and sit down?"

He blushes again and shoves his hand in his pocket like it's burnt. "Oh, yes. Sorry."
