A US Consolidated B24 Liberator makes an emergency landing in a field near Eindhoven after being hit by flak during Operation Market Garden - Sept 1944. Only gunner Frank DiPalma survived. He was rescued from the wreckage by Franciscan monks who hid him in the village of Huize Assisi until its liberation by the British

1/2: Oil painted by Frank Wootton in 1945, portraying an RAF Liberator of 356 Squadron undergoing undercarriage retraction tests at its base in India. Wootton painted this work outdoors in the scorching heat. Just as he completed the canvas, a sudden & fierce sandstorm struck-the airfield, throwing a truck against the side of the Liberator, leaving it a write-off. Luckily Wootton had used aviation fuel as a medium so the oil paint had dried rapidly. He located the canvas some distance away, covered in sand but the painting intact underneath.
