B.Miles - Wasting Time (New York) (Old Sea Brigade remix)

A spirited invigoration off Brenna Miles’ recent work “In Order of Appearance”, the artist known as B.Miles offers the remixing duties to her standout “Wasting Time” (New York), to Old Sea Brigade. Capturing the frustration and panic that Miles first encountered in her move to the Big Apple, “New York” is an ode to the struggling artist; working mundane jobs while growing paranoid to the idea of complacency. Cutting through the saturating reverb of the original mix and finding clarity through its soaring vocals which howl with emotion, the remix is complimented by the cinematic cuts and an industrial, trip-hop shuffle from its urbane mannerisms.

B.Miles’ new song, Running, is more a sublime cruise, a lithe and breezy dose of drafty fluttering R&B pop. The smoky voiced chanteuse from New York laments over unrequited affection on her lustrous gem. Golden opulent electronics and a gently snapping groove flitter about each other briskly on the bittersweet aria from an EP expected to arrive shortly.

B.Miles makes it clear she’s nobody’s second best with “+1”, a track about personifying the "extra body" when company fails to show up. Centered as the midway point of her newly released LP "Time Doesn’t Heal. It Hides.", the song's slower tempo and retiring pace finds a fitting place as the album's physical glue and anchor. Minimal in its prose, the track drifts gently to its bluesy melancholy and sparse percussion, never overwhelming the gentle purr from B.Miles' vocals. Emotionally bittersweet, "+1" is a quiet surrender where the fear of being left behind will inevitably gives way to loneliness. Speaking at about the conflicted feelings on the track Brenna "B.Miles" had this to say:

"'+1' basks in the heat of being wanted, even when you know the emptiness that follows. It’s that familiar kind of pain you can’t forget - but still reach for anyway. A cycle of longing, intimacy, loneliness and desperation - stuck on repeat since Twenty Fifteen. Every time I’ve reached for the warmth, I’m burned.”

B.Miles - Five Alarm

Brenna "B." Miles has gotten a good 10 years of mileage behind the release of her breakout single "Salt", and her latest single is an homage to those early days. Titled "Five Alarm", the track channels the same energy of her predecessors, but grows increasingly cognizant. Carried by the hidden weight of its quiet emotion, B.Miles finds her self burnt by the flames of passion — an Icarian allusion of sorts.

Written about the heat of intimacy and its fleeting closeness, "Five Alarm" is a dark and dimly-lit track. Slow and drenching in its percussive tread, the single's shadowy atmosphere is pierced by the warm howl of Miles’ vocals — a striking contrast to its cold, restrained severity. Speaking about the emotion of retrospective single Brenna had this to say on energy behind "Five Alarm:

"You know it won’t last, but for a minute, you’d burn alive in it if you could want to burn alive in it."

B.Miles - Emergency Contact

On her continued trajectory of sharing songs that would resonate with that from her childhood Walkman, B.Miles (Brenna Miles) shares the upbeat downtempo of "Emergency Contact". Noted by Brenna's falsetto-tipped delivery, the track consolidates over her billowy vocal gymnastics whose harmonies that run in parallel to that of its break beat rhythms. Ruminating over the thought of a dependable "one and only", as a sort of proverbial "Emergency Contact", Brenna spoke at length about the significance of the song's title:

"A few summers ago, I sat with a bunch of friends in a backyard asking them who their emergency contact was. I’ve always been fascinated by how someone picks one. I moved across the country from my family many years ago and depended on my significant other during my 20's to be my emergency contact. When we split up as I entered my 30's, I had a quick realization that without them in my life, there was nobody I could consider to be another choice. Adding another layer to that is, in reality, your old ‘emergency contact’ is still around - and you can still technically reach out to them - but there’s a fear that holds you back from doing so."

Having spoken briefly about the influence of Natalia Imbruglia in her music, you can see the subtle homage to her work in the videography of her latest track.
