SDA - Final 6
SDA - Colour Printing
These are the printed images I am trying to choose from. I have a large selection of physical prints to play about with which is good as I have a lot of options. In my final 6 photographs I hope to have good portraits of all the members in the band and a 2 photos which are a mixture of good group photographs.
I feel the portraits of Ross are composed well and give you good context as to what he is doing, much like the ones of Robin as you can tell he is in the mood to play lead guitar at practice. The portraits of Will are good as you can see real emotion in the image, a real happiness bout his character, moreover I feel when shooting I framed him perfectly giving the viewer a clear view.
The last two photographs are both unique and I think I will use both of them in the final 6 because it shows all the band putting effort in and also the band relaxing afterwards.
SDA - Darkroom Notes
In the dark room it began to get tedious for a first timer, however was enjoyable. The toil of getting the correct exposure for pictures proved to be difficult, but once I got used to the printing techniques it became easier.
I used this notebook to log my settings for the enlarger, then began to print. Towards the end as a lot of my roll of film was very yellow toned the setting became similar and I was able to do the last few prints quickly.
SDA - iPhone Shoot
As I try to see the band as much as possible in the weeks we have together, I try to shoot in various ways. For instance I shoot 35mm colour film quite a lot and is most likely going to be what I print, per contra I have used new technologies such as camera phones to capture snaps of the band.
I wouldn’t print these necessarily as they aren’t the best quality but as this is an ongoing project it is nice to build up a library of images to keep and maybe showcase. Yet the content in the photographs still tell further stories of the band and members.
I think the best shots of the shoot are the ones of Will playing guitar late at night on the carpark and group shots of the band that are composed quite well, however the colours do look a bit bland.
As I have been shooting on 35mm film on my Canon AE-1 to make the project more personal to me as I dearly enjoy shooting on film and this camera, I have been in the darkroom trying to perfect my prints and it has been proving harder than I expected.
However in the darkroom I am enjoying myself and learning how to print properly and correctly on the enlargers.
After nine hours in the darkroom I have accumulated around 4 prints that may or may not be used in the final edit. It has been hard trying to perfect the exposure time after time as some of the images look a lot different in colour form the contact sheets.

Artist Research - The 1975
The 1975 are one of my favourite bands so looking at their imagery I find it very inspiring. The band create an image for themselves using colours to their advantage. In doing so the band have created a master following allowing them to grow more and more popular, in doing so this creates more interesting moments, more interesting stories, more interesting photographs.
The images from live gigs are composed very well showing the band in euphoric ways which make them seem like other worldly. The photograph of Matthew Healy’s guitar is also quite inspiring as it holds a lot of emotion, that is his instrument that he plays everyday on stage for the world to see, combining that with unreal lighting it comes across very well.
I think to create good band photographs they have to be sporadic and fun, but also follow a similar theme and style. Example being The 1975 craving the colour pinks and their specified colour scheme. So allowing my photographs to follow that, a colour scheme that works well with sporadic moments that are relatable to an audience.
Artist Research - Tame Impala Currents in the Making
“Directed by Matt Sav and Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, the clip is actually less a process video and more a montage of Kevin Parker, and his free-flowing, luscious locks, twinkling away with various instruments, set against a magnificent natural vista.
The track you’re hearing in the background, according to Stereogum, is Nangs, a short interlude that appears at the beginning of Currents.”
This piece is composed fantastically, mixing the psychedelic colours and music with visuals that explore Kevin Parkers journey to creating his album and exploring himself and music.
The narrative tells the story of himself and the band touring, writing and recording allowing the audience to experience it for themselves via escapism almost.
