Booklet Introduction Description:
Japan, The Land of the Rising Sun, has an area of 142,603 square miles. Consisting of four large islands and many smaller ones, it lies off the eastern coast of Asia. The four large islands are Honshu - the main island - Kyushu, Shikoku, and Hokkaido. It is a mountainous country with scores of peaks towering over 8,000 feet and some 500 volcanoes. Mount Fuji (12,395 feet) is the highest elevation. Japan's Inland Sea has more islands than any sea on earth.
Japan is a land of terraced hillsides, tiny plains, and story-book gardens; cherry blossoms, azaleas, chrysanthemums, and brilliant maple foliage; festivals, pagodas, temples, and shrines - all exquisite in beauty.
The 1950 population of Japan is 83,408,026. The Japanese are extremely polite, running their lives according to strict rules of etiquette. They are lovers of beauty, especially in nature. A hard-working race, they dress up their lives with gay colors combined with sensitive artistry.
Tokyo (population 5,385,071) is the capital of Japan, and the third largest city in the world.
