"Famiglia" - Ba Jin

Da tempo non postavo una recensione, perché ovviamente non ho avuto molto tempo per leggere recentemente, quindi niente, si comincia l'anno di letture a marzo. Questo è uno di quei libri che mi porto dietro da un annetto, forse anche qualcosa in più, perché non è uno di quei libri che si legge con trasporto, se non a tratti. Mi è stato consigliato da una ragazza che studia(va) lingue e letterature orientali, dato che non avevo mai letto nulla di autori cinesi. Che dire. È un libro della prima metà del Novecento e si sente, tanto. Non si può dire non sia un libro che non ha molto da dare, anzi, il ritratto di una famiglia benestante in decadimento è pressoché perfetta. Tuttavia non è il genere di lettura che riesco ad apprezzare completamente, un po' come Ritratto di signora (peraltro mai finito, chissà come mai). Punti da apprezzare sono la (auto)critica alle classi sociali più alte e il tentativo di spezzare un modus vivendi non rispettoso delle vite umane (meno abbienti). Lato negativo il machismo (eh vabb, direi anche sia normale data l'epoca, ma è sempre bene ricordare quali sono i punti "invecchiati male" di un libro) e la scarsa cura nell'editare il libro in versione e-book. Detto ciò, se vi piacciono i libri storici (a me non troppo) è una bella lettura.

'Patriotism' started to rise in the "era of animal desire," when the state came into being. The state is characterized by hypocrisy and selfishness. In order to satisfy its animal desire, the state pushes its people to invade other countries and to die. The victory of war brings pleasures to warlords and politicians, and the loss of the war takes the flesh and blood of the people as military expenses. Is war of any benefit to the common people? Unfortunately, the common people are totally unaware that so-called patriotism is a weapon used to kill their dearest ones. Patriotism is a monster that kills people.

虽然环境的关系很大，但环境也是人造的。我们又何尝不可以改变环境？人无论如何应该跟环境奋斗。能够征服环境，就可以把幸福给自己争回来。 Though one's environment is greatly influential, it is nevertheless created by humanity.  How couldn't environment be changed? No matter what, humans must battle their environment. Conquering one's environment allows one to take happiness back for oneself.

Ba Jin (巴金), The Family (家)

The Family is Ba Jin’s representative work, and uses multiple generations of a familial line to symbolize 20th century struggles between tradition and perceived modernity. The novel is set in Chengdu of Sichuan province during the 1920s, and tells the story of the upper class Gao family. The three sons of family and their female counterparts struggle with the demands of their feudalist (封建) and patriarchal family, and achieve varying degrees of success in overcoming the oppressive hierarchies.
