This was so much fun to study. The German Autumn of 1977 was a chaotic time for West Berlin and a morally grey case of rightful activism turning into a funhouse-mirror version of the very terror it protests. These university students' motives were clear -- discovering your parents' generation partook in the Holocaust is a realization I can't even comprehend -- but because one charismatic Charlie Manson type took advantage of their feelings of betrayal and knack for public protest, they became the most notorious terrorists of their time and place. But what does a horror remake of a 1970s cult classic have to say about such events? The answer took some time and obsession, but I think I've got it.
